In a .454 Casull...using 36 grains of W296 or H110 and 260 grain .45 caliber boolit...How much barrel length/distance would it take to burn up 36 grains of these powders?

Thanks

by "burn up" I assume you mean "make efficient use of"
all the powder is already burning by the time the bullet leaves the cylinder.

I bet you could gain velocity all the way up to 18" or so

Yes..."make efficient use of"...that is what I thinking of.

Thank you

I'm just curious why you ask? do you want to build a rifle?
This is just my opinion, but I think with a cartridge of that capacity you could gain 400fps from a 7" to a 20" barrel.
My philosophy is efficiency be damned-it's results we're after.
What does one care if one burns 500HP worth of powder in 350HP worth of barrel as long as it's an accurate repeatable load?
Is your efficiency better if you get more FPS/grain of powder burned? if so, then; you will want to use faster powder.
Is your efficiency better if the $/FPS/grain to shoot one powder vs. another is less? if so, then; you will still want to use a faster powder than H110

Ruger, I'll ask it as a question. The inverse would be, the shorter the barrel the less efficient the bullet will be? What shoots quite well through a 5 inch .38 special wheel gun will not do as well in a snubbie same caliber ? We're all going to have to reload specific recipes for each of our different guns. Arrrg, growing evidence that Santa is going to have to pack a chronograph for my stocking.

info from Handloader mag #23? useing 2- freedom arms 454 casull revolvers , one with a 7 1/2 " barrel the other with 4 3/4" barrel.

260 nosler partion bullet
36.0 gr W-296
Velocity in 4 3/4 " barrel 1,739 fps
Velocity in 7 1/2 " barrel 1,811 fps

AAC #9-28.5 gr
4 3/4" barrel 1,561 fps
7 1/2" barrel 1,604 fps

Really less difference than what you would expect !

I have several FA 454s and the 36grs of 296 with the 260 gr nosler partion will shoot under a inch at 50 yards from a bench with 4x scope . and deadly on PA whitetails all 1 shot & drop results from approx 50 to 100 yards . one day i might get a shot at a PA black bear when hunting ?

Another senario ! when using the Hornday 240 gr JHP and 296 powder and max loads i loaded 2.0 grs more powder and got almost identical velocity withen a few fps , normaly the 2.0 grs extra would of given me +100fps increase than i got with the 2.0 gr lighter powder charge , I guess you can only burn so much powder in a 7 1/2 in 45 cal barrel , Im sure Dick Casull figured this out years ago.
