Looking at recovered bullets Civil War relics, there are different smooth sided hollow based bullet designs, most are .577 or .58 or .69 caliber, some smaller.
Were the smooth sided designs issued paper wrapped or is that not in all cases?

The smooth sided 58s are typically bullets from paper Enfield cartridges. I don't know about the 69s. On the 58 bullets you can usually see a truncated cone shape in the hollow base, and often see a swage mark on the outside from base to nose.

enfield pattern paper cartridges are a lot of fun to shoot!

I read somewhere about a guy getting astounding accuracy from his rifled musket by using a smooth sided, paper patched hollow point bullet. I have been wanting to make a mould to produce such a bullet but haven't managed to get a round tuit yet. It sounds like it should work well judging by the results I have had with similar bullets in other muzzle loaders, and should shoot better than regular hollow base minie's as well as allowing a stiffer powder charge. We shall see....

Trying to find time to try out the adjustment on this paper patch mold now.
