Can I get some suggestions on good magnum powders up to this point I have only used Unique, Power Pistol and Tightgroup and want to get something alittle slower. I know of 2400 and H110 but with the supplies as they are I need as many options as possible. Will be loading 357 mag with 158grainers and possibly a 41 mag as well.

Win 296 is the same as H110. Both are full power only, no reduced loads.

Blue dot has worked for me in the 357, but doesn't quite match 296 for top velocity.

I have read , however, not to use blue dot in the 41.

I've used blue dot and can't complain. I want to try some H4227, supposed to be good in many magnum loads, you might want to give it a try. But for full power loads h110/w296 will be hard to beat, if you can find some.

AA#9 works good in most magnum sized cases. I've used several pounds of it. Faster than H-110, ball type, loads well.

2400 and AA no 9 are great but my all time favorite is Herco.

With Herco, you give up about 100 fps, some recoil, significant flash and blast, and in return you get better accuracy.

Been using it since around 1970.

Not that I can recommend it, LilGun.

I second the notion of using 4227. It is an old-school single-based extruded powder that gets a little overlooked, to our benefit. these days. Makes it a little easier to find than 296/110 when supplies are limited.....

'Bout my all-time favorite in .45 Colt. Smells good too, but you'll find some unburned granules. Mag primers are generally best, in my experience.

Been using it since around 1970.

I have a pound or two of Herco around here that is quite a few years old.

I bought it to experiment with but quickly settled on 2400 for something less than full-power loads in Magnum cartridges. I use W296( H110) for full-power loads.

I think I will pull out a few hundred cases and resume those suspended experiments in a few cartridges and see how some of my revolvers react to Herco. I am intrigued by the "better accuracy" statement.

AA9 and AA4100 probably have the greatest amount of flash suppressant in them.

According to Alliant, BlueDot is a no-no in any 41 mag load and .357 with 125gr bullets. BD probably has the biggest flash. BD's pressure goes up when the ambient temp goes down, things can get pretty wild in the cold

W296/H110 Will probably get you the most velocity. It has the loudest blast and is a very close second to BD in terms of flash

Lil'Gun is weird, it gives top velocity with lower pressures, but it burns HOT! So much so that some have reported damage and excessive wear on their guns.

300-MP looks like it might be a real winner, but there isnt a whole lot of data out there for it

2400 is old and dirty, but well behaved and I really like it. it what I would go with if I were in you shoes.

The 41 mag's problem is that primer size. Same problem exists in the 45ACP but the bore size of the 45 compensates fairly well. The 45ACP case manufactures are slowly fixing the problem. BlueDot is extremely ignition sensitive for such a slower pistol powder. ... felix

Has anyone tried Alliant's MP-300? I want to, but have been unable to find any on the shelf.

I've used Lil Gun. It did give higher velocities without excess pressure. Large velocity fluctuations between individual rounds. Didn't seem to hurt groups any. More work to go on this one.

I am going to try 300MP in my 41 mag this week. I have been using LiL'Gun for a long time in my 41 with no problems, consistent velocity, great accuracy, no hotter than other powders and cooler than 2400.
Needed powder and only could find the 300 MP.

Finding #2400 around here has been fruitless; I tried Ramshot Enforcer as a substitute and really like it. AA#9 is a good one also. H4227 is a fine powder that people sometimes overlook.

I only have 2 guns capable of magnum type loads a Rossi 92 in 45 Colt and a 454 Casull. I use 3 powders only 4227, 2400 and Lil'Gun. I tried the 296/h110 but don't like the limited load range of about 3% with them.

AArolar -

Howdy !

IMHO - 14.5gr WW296 ( H110 same stuff ) and SP Mag primer under any Lyman lead SWC of 158 - 172 gr is THE best load of ALL TIME... for .357Mag.

Accurate and clean... in both handguns ( "N"-frames ), and an 1894SC.

Been my go-to load for 35+yr.

With regards,
