I was looking through some weights at a shop that lets me pick and choose. I found some 8oz truck weights marked TALZ. I looked them up and found that they are zinc coated lead.

Does anyone know what this coating is and if I keep my melt at 650 or less will I be able to get the zinc off?

Their are a lot of these weights and would hate to loose them if it is possible to get the lead from the coating.

Please let me know your thoughts...

No help I know, just a useless comment- zinc coated lead doesn't make any sense! You got my curiosity up too...

Ok, what I found is "coated zinc wheel weights" as in zinc weights coated with something, like paint. No mention of lead.

maybe it's zinc weights, coated with some type of paint.
Like: zinc; coated
Two separate things but missing punctuation between them

el34 and bumpo,
Looking at the site el posted I also think that it is zinc coated with paint.

Oh well, will continue the quest for more lead.

Thanks for the help...

You could buy the Zinc ones and trade them to ShadyGrady for lead. He uses Zinc and he has lead!

As long as the price is right so that you can afford to ship it and still feel good about the total cost!

Just one option, thinking outside the box!

That means another WW source, gone with the wind. How long will it be till the greenies find fault with zinc?

I run into the TALZ weights occasionally... but most of the truck weights I get are just marked TAL (which are lead).

As you've already discovered, the TALZ weights are all zinc coated in paint. I have a nice box of them I'm saving up for shadygrady...

No problem... I don't have near 40+ lbs yet... but I also have 6 buckets of wheel-weights that were just roughly sorted through so I'll likely find more when I finish sorting and smelting those...

For reference the "TAL" truck weights are for the aluminum wheels, at work I have them new in the box in 2, 3, 4, 6, 8 and 10 oz weights, I believe the paint on them is so they don't tarnish and put a stain on the polished aluminum wheels.
