Greetings
I was 5 when dad heard the USS Enterprise CV6 was to be "busted up" for scrap. He cried sitting at the kitchen table. Dad was a Landing Officer Assitant an was always proud of the "Big E". If my memory is correct Enterprise was the most decorated ship of WW2 and the only pre/WW2 carrier left after Saratoga was destroyed at the bomb tests.

As she slips beneath the waves for the last time.
She will join many of the mighty ships that went before her.
If she cant be saved. May she live at the bottom of the sea in peace

Many will remember and never forget her

It is sad and the sadness for me is that we are witness to the ending of an era. I'm 57, my dad served in WWII in the navy. Thankfully he is still alive but there are many we lose every day. In my life time I was affected by the outcome of WWII indirectly and will, Lord willing, be around to see that chapter of history closed permanently. Truthfully, I never thought in these kind of terms till I hit my mid/late 40's.

Both mine were decomm'd & sold as scrap. Had a buddy assigned to the Atlanta, used for some minor A bomb tests.

Better for a proud ship to spend eternity in Davy Jones Locker than be sent to a ship broker to be cut up for scrap.

Sea going tugs are good looking ships. Too bad it would cost so much to keep her afloat.

Wasn't the Texas there as well? Still down in La Porte, TX as a floating museum.

You are right on that BlackSmith the only way for me to see em cut up is if they used that steel in a new ship of the line like they did with the USS New York using the TC steel.

So did The Showboat (http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/sh-usn/usnsh-n/bb55.htm)
so did the ship that fired the 1st and last 16" shell of WWII (http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/sh-usn/usnsh-m/bb59.htm)
so did what should have been featured in the TV show jersey shore (http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/sh-usn/usnsh-n/bb62.htm)
so did The last dreadnought (http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/sh-usn/usnsh-w/bb64.htm)

I believe the only modern battlewagon from North Carolina to Wisconsin that wasn't present was Iowa. She was in overhaul. I recall reading that every regimental commander on that rock had a battleship available for fire support. Every battalion commander had a cruiser.

Agreed on both accounts!
