View Full Version : Casting for Machine Guns

I recently casted some Lyman TC 125 grain lead bullets for 9mm. They run fine in my pistols shoot straight and seem to perform well. I then decided to try some in my UZI Group Industries SubMachine Gun. They fed fine in gun, being an open bolt Machine gun I thought I would get some hang-ups but I didn't have a single one. I was little surprised. HOWEVER, when I brought my target back, every single round had keyholed on the paper target. I saw perfect sideways bullets on the paper. I was curious does anybody on the forum shoot cast through they sub-guns, if so have you ever run into this problem?
I tumbled lubed these particular bullets with Liquid Alox even though they are not tumble lube bullets and I sized them in a Lee sizer, then I relubed them.

Probably don't want to size them.

Some sub guns have large chambers and oversize bores. slug that mini and adjust size to fit.

Marty, What does "Slug that Mini" mean?

Slug the bore, you may be suprised to see it is .358 and may need a .359-.360 bullet

you tumble lubed them and they tumbled so what did you expect ? just kidding :) :)
I am shooting a FA Uzi using 38 cal 158 grn boolits.. PC'ed sized to 358 and its working well ..
as they say slug the bore and go up 1 to 2 thousands .. so far .002 up seems the best for me

In my open bolt subguns such as an Uzi, I am using Lee's 125 TL NR bullet sized to .357. The come out at about .359. If your bullets are dropping at .357 or less, then I would not size. I am also dropping them in water but since I am sizing about .002, I may be loosing surface hardness. My bullets are flying straight but I still get leading. If I brush out the barrel every 2-3 magazines, I can keep the leading down enough for somewhat normal cleaning. I am also shooting a plus P load for open bolt guns and they appear to eject and function better.

Cool thanks guys for the info!
I've got 10,000 115 grain Berries bullets coming any day and I think I'm going to dedicate those to my full Auto shooting. I'll just cast for the pistols for right now since it seems to working the best.

Friend of mine has used Laser Cast .452 TC bullets in his 1928 Thompson with excellent results.

Water dropped boolits will not get softer except where the lead actually moved. Boolits shot with shallow lands still might be questioned, water dropped or not. ... felix
Just curious but did you get terrible leading in the Uzi?

I had a 40 S&W . I thought what the heck air cooled WW ought to do. Every load tumbled from start to max. the next batch I water dropped . It's the only 1 I've ever shot that took a max load for best load.
In that case harder was the answer to the tumble. 403 in a 401 groove even the tumblers didn't lead.

My semi auto Uzi groove diameter is .358. I can get a .360 boolit to chamber reliably. If you are sizing to .356, and tumble loobing with LLA, try going bigger and using a good lube.
I have a MK760 9mm and a powder springs MAC/10 45 acp and never had a problem.
I use straight WW water quenched.
Tumble lube and use a 450 lyman that I converted over to a push through.
This ammo also works in a friends transferable mini uzi and 1928 west hurley.
All but the west hurley have cans hanging on them, never a problem, nice round holes.
Like everyone else said slug the barrel.
Something isn't right.

No it wasn't bad at all, I use a OIL/Lubricant, which is also a metal conditionor called FIRECLEAN www.cleanergun.com is the place that invented it, not only does it make your Semi-Autos run slicker than snail snot, but it has a higher smoke point than Froglube, and I found that it reduces lead fouling very well. I use it now for everything.
I was having some leading issues in my G21 with a KKM barrel, then I used it as a borecleaner and it not only removed all leading deposits with nothing more than a factory GLOCK rod and plastic brush, the next time I shot it the gun had almost no leading.
Some PICS.....
Just to Give you an Idea, This is a G21 Barrel with 400 rounds of range scrap lead, 3-5 minutes of cleaning with FIRECLEAN...
USED a GLOCK plastic brush , one piece of toilet paper.

Just so you can compare here is my TLR-1 light after shooting, almost completely smoked out!
