I've recently built and tested a (very rough) prototype bullet trap design that I came up with. It worked quite well initially, retaining all lead launched into it from my 1911 and Python. Then..... a guest on our shooting line decided to 'Swiss cheese' the whole thing with his AR15. Guess I need to build a stronger version for such eventualities. Before I do, I'd like to see what others have done/tried. Gotta say, its nice to put 5 lbs of lead on target and get your 5 lbs back afterward! I'm not looking to stop high powered rifle bullets, but anything up to a healthy .44 mag would be about right. Suggestions???

Here's a whole thread about it.

If your bullet trap is made from steel, you might want to consider switching to AR500 plate instead. Using a shallower backplate angle will help decelerate the bullet with less damage to the backplate. There are quite a few other threads about creating bullet traps. Here's one and there are some links to others in it:

EDIT -- Ooops, someone beat me to that link...
