A few weeks back my shooting buddy had the idea to take our old BP cap & ball revolvers out for a change of pace. We've been slaving away with those modern SAA's and leverguns in past weeks and decided to take a break. I only have one cap gun, he has a few more than that but he brought a sweet little .36 Colt and I brought my Uberti 1858 Remington. Neither of us had fired these old relics in awhile so the loading process was tedious and lengthy. My first round offhand one-handed was dead on at 10 yds, couldn't have centered it better with a pencil. Next five were pretty tight, as were the next six. I didn't recall this old revolver shooting this well, decided to shoot it at 15 yds. Seems these were pretty good as well, considering the loose nut yanking the trigger whenever the sights appear to line up.
Last time I shot this ol' girl I thought 777 was pretty good powder. What a difference a little bit of old school thinking makes! And yes, those are genuine homemade pure lead roundballs. Those have been cluttering up my loading bench for over a year. Finally got to try them out. :bigsmyl2:

After reading a lot about them, I'd like to try out some old roundball shooters, myself. The more I see of them, the more I like the idea. I just have way too many modern smokeless cartridge revolvers on hand.

All I can say is they're cheap, dirty fun! The Uberti replicas are nicely made, you should see this ol' girl when she's cleaned up! They don't cost much and a flask of BP, a tin of primers and a handful of cast RB's is all it takes to have a nice, leisurely trip (or two) to the range.

And no cartridge cases to clean up after you get home! Always a bonus.

Yep. I have been thinking about a revolver and it looks as if it is going to be a cap and ball. They are so beautiful and they work so well.

Good point, seems like I spend as much time cleaning brass as I do guns when shooting BP. I took a little extra time cleaning my old 1858 tonight, partly because I don't know when I'll shoot it next and partly because it's one of the prettiest guns I own. It'll probably hang out on the coffee table for a few days before I "remember" to sock it up and put it in the safe. Just want to make sure all that moosemilk dries, of course. ;-) She once belonged to an old friend, he took good care of her so I owe that to both of them.

Nothing else like the Holy Black you wouldn't be sorry.

I never had luck with subs, BP is better. 777 can't stand any compression and Pyrodex needs a little but not too much.
We actually shot many deer with our C&B revolvers and they work like a .44 mag. Just keep distance close because of accuracy. C&B makers never paid enough attention to twist rates for a RB.
