358 Winchester - 35 Whelen re-barrel question Mauser action

I want to re-barrel a Mauser to 358 Winchester. I wasn't finding a barrel as just 358 Winchester. Can I buy a 35 Whelen barrel,and have it turned down? I don't know if one exceeds the other in case dimensions except of course length. I have 358 brass,and dies.

What is the mauser currently chambered for? If it's a .308 or a .243, you won't need another barrel. JES will rebore and rifle it as is.

E.R Shaw built an FN 98 Mauser for me about 20 years ago. It's one of my nicest hunting rifles. It may be hard to find an over the counter 358 Win barrel. You may have to go with an unchambered barrel and have you 'smith fit and chamber it for you.

Current caliber is 8mm Mauser original bbl.

35 Whelen is based on the 30-06 so is longer than the 358 and the barrel can probably be cut off a quarter inch or so and the threads picked up if they are correct for your action. I'd check the twist though. I'd suspect the Whelen might have a tighter twist than you want.

The .358 is out, but you could make a 35 whelen out of the current barrel without removing it. Having it rebored and rechambered shouldn't be too big a deal.
I'm not sure, but I'll bet if you call JES, they could do it all. AND, after learning of JES, I gotta be honest, It's hard to pull a barrel and install a new one for what they charge. If you put a price on the headache of doing some barrels, you're out a lot less.

.35 Whelen is a BAD boy! That'd be a heck of a rifle when you're done.

In reference to the above article , I would guess it is a few years old as prices are more then that for those services , I do know that at jes rebore , Jesse does the 3 groove rebore for $225 , now if you had a 308 barrel on that mauser it would be a sure thing to get your 358 , which gets me thinking of the Indian 2A enfields as a likely candidate for such a conversion, well good luck on your search.

There is roughly ½" difference in case length between the .35 Whelen and .358 Winchester. The neck on the Whelen is longer and the throat on the Whelen chambers my Clymer reamer has cut are very long.

I personally wouldn't buy a Whelen barrel to make a .358 Winchester. By the time you get done cutting the shank you would be money ahead to just buy a profiled blank and get it threaded and chambered to .358 Winchester.

As much as I like my Whelens, if I had been into casting boolits when I built them, I would have built .358 Winchesters.

I didn't think,and I am glad you reminded me of just getting a blank. From the late 80's to the early 2007 I worked so hard,and long that I quit building,and just bought,and shot what the Gun Co. made. Now trying to build I need to be reminded "of"! Since my brain tries to make harder than it is! Thanks for the input. Got my tract of thought straightened out.
