There won't be much left of 30 cal cast lead bullets though.

What I get off of my hanging targets from rifles is mostly a grey cloud that drifts away slowly. kinda like a lead balloon.

This does not sound good for an organic farm/ranch. Hmmmm.....

Isn't lead "organic"? It comes from the earth, right? :)

I have seen a water pit used under a steel target
The guy had less than a foot of water and a steel container to hold the water

After a while he just drained most of the water and used a shop vac to suck the lead and remaining water up

Bad thing I donated more than a few pounds of lead into the water
As I was shooting my 45/70

You might get little lead discs that weigh 10 percent of the original bullet weight. They will be at the base of the target. I find them to be barely worth picking up.

Want to recycle the lead? Then don't shoot steel. Every 'tink I hear is a bullet that won't be recycled.

I've used a lot of range scrap from indoor ranges with armor plate backstops. There are the small disks as mentioned above, jacket fragments and powder. The vast majority of the lead is in the powder. Outdoors, you are going to lose all that powder since there is nothing to contain it. To get a good recovery rate, you'll have to put the plates into an enclosure to capture the splatter.

Looks like I'll just abandon this idea. I surely don't want to contaminate a place where I'm growing food with 5000 lbs of pulverizes lead.
I might trade them off for something.
I do have bags of the shredded rubber garden mulch that I can build a bullet trap with.
