View Full Version : Make paradox by rifling a fixed full choke?

So i was thinking(*), if one was really careful not to marr the nominal diameter of the bore before the choke, and one had the tools and skills, could a paradox style rifled bore be made by rifling just the constricted portion of a fixed choke barrel?

Anyone done this/ or have any ideas what tool might be used to accomplish it? I wonder of one of those backboring tools can be tapped lightly thru a fixed choke? hmm...

(*) scary, I know.

Also, in other thoughts, i was thinking that a reverse-paradox might be a better idea: rifling the first part of the barrel ahead of the forcing cone, then smoothing out the rest to match groove diameter. I think that would give enough spin to a slug that woudl continue to spin beyond the rifled part. but would not spin a shot column much, or if it did, the increased sidewall pressure from the shot-in-cup would slow it down again so it wont throw a doughnut pattern.

Any more learned ideas on these topics welcome!

Either would be as easy or as annoying to make as the other.

The paradox could be started w a fixed choke smoothebore, by rifling the constriction.

The reverse-paradox can start w a rifled bore, measure the groove diameter, and backbore it from the muzzle to that diameter.

p.s. someone probably thought of both of these already, but if the reverse idea is truly new; i'm calling it the "pileri-dox". (ah, vanity...my favorite sin...)

Not new at all. The original Paradox guns had rifled chokes... but I think the rifling was also cut with grooves following the choke cone so choked lands and grooves. Not positive about that but they used a patented choked ratchet rifling. There are drawings on the internet ~ there it is:

Hmmm, doesn't look like the grooves do follow the cone. There is substantial choke though and they really squeezed those Paradox boolits down.

Anyway, I have been thinking the same thing and have been planning to make a rifling bench to do it. The old style rifling benches are pretty simple to make. Toad Hall out of Ohio used to publish a nice book and DVD with plans and instructions. I got it a while ago but haven't got around to building the rifling bench. My intent is just for rifled choke tubes with wide grooves, narrow lands and deep rifling with slow twist. I'll get to it one day!

I am still playing with smoothbore for now.

Screw in chokes seem to make some folks happy and some not so happy. James Gates (Dixie Slugs) reported that the choke tubes can torque up very tight and be difficult to remove and some have said they tighten up so much they are about impossible to remove.

I have not tried them so have no personal experience but the rifling tends to be shallow and fast twist for sabot slugs so not really suited to full bore balls or slugs. Not to say it doesn't work, I just don't think it is ideal for full bore balls or "square" slugs. 1:70" to 1:120" twist would be a more suitable rate for 12 ga. balls.

Greetings, a rifled choke tube that is not long enough to grip the slug or sabot to impart the required spin will be useless as the slug will zip through, what I'm trying to say is you need a rifled tube about 7 to 8 inch long to get the job done right ( Paradox guns were rifled with deeper rifling )

I wish the rifled barrels had a tiny bit more deeper rifling ( just a bit more )

The above is a 8 inch rifled tube.

Hoping it helps.

So it looks like my idea for making a paradox barrel is exactly the way it was done! nice! Looking foward to seeing if you guys who are making it happen produce a barrel. Very interested!

Not at all interested in rifled chokes.

The reverse-paradox is still interesting me, too.
