I've got a chrono, I just didn't set it up for the initial load development - I don't like to be biased toward velocity because I want precision first. 31 grs Varget, Rem 9 1/2 primer, new R-P brass, 28" Douglas XX barrel, 311299 with Lotak Hard Lube. I'm guessing (hoping?) for 1900 fps. Anyone care to toss any others out for fun before I run it over a chrono next week? :) FWIW, the 5 shot groups are MOA at 100 yds.

I think you are closer to 1800, but that is only a guess.

I am curious to find out. Although I don't own a 30-40, I do feed a couple of ballistic twins in .303 Brit and have been wanting to try Varget but have found no load data for lead. I have been thinking 30 gr. would be a good starting point for the 314299. Let us know what you find out. JW

Lets see, tight bore, powder about 4895 burn rate, slightly slower, 31gr, my guess is just a tad over 2000fps, make it 2025fps.

I'm interested to see what it does clock at when you get a chance to check it. I shoot 32.0 Varget with the 311299 in my ruger #3 in 30-40 Krag for a 500 meter silhouette ram load. I always figured it was 1900 ish with the little 18" barrel. Gotta hang on to it but it shoots well. Same load works my M1a great also.

I did Chrono it
314299, sized t0 .311
No.3 Ruger, F210 primers, 32gr Varget, LBT Blue, Hornady GC
1800.4, SD 25.3, group at 100yds was 1/2 x 1 1/2...
I don't remember doing this, but it is written in the load book
I was trying to get a RAM load that worked...had some worked better, but a 6.5 pound gun with 200gr bullets....hurts..this was as much as I could handle as 45-70bpcr knows well
