Glass Bedding The Winchester FN Model 70 In Pic

I have decided to replace the hot melt glue <eyes rolling> with real bedding compound.
Hopefully FN will decide not to use this material anymore and leave the material to the modern house wife for froo froo floral arrangements.
I anticipate this should be easier than the M-14's I have bedded in the past.

So here we go.....

Here are some of the Winchester Model 70's Sporters we picked up a year or so ago.
So far 4 in 30.06 and 2 in .270 Winchester.
Were setting them all up with Talley QD Rings and Bases along with 30MM Leupold VX3 3x9 for the 30-06 and 3X9 VX3 1 inch for the .270's.
These rifles will also be inviting the local domestic deer population to a venison dinner when we finally get moved to our new ranch. ;)

Trigger Springs from Ernie the Gunsmith arrived. http://www.erniethegunsmith.com/
Test loads of Barnes TSX 168 grainers in 30.06.
Check out the Bondus Allen wrench I put in the package. I heat this wrench up and burn through the hot melt glue they use to hold the set screw for the trigger weight spring in place.

We picked up a dozen Tuner Rifle High Power Match Slings and just got them oiled to match the stock with EVOO.
Uncle Mike QD Mil Spec Sling Swivels arrived also.
I'll get a pic up if someone request one.

Duke: Why is there ten of them. Are they going to be rentals or loaners?

What is the complete story on these guns.

They will be for our ranch. I don't do customers. Just some cheap deer rifles simple as that.
Because horses fall quite often and I won't just be able to run to Walmart to replace them. Notice the scabbard on the saddle. ;)
Wait a minute? I didn't know you could have to many guns right? :bigsmyl2:

Thanks Andre. Those are Billy Cook Saddles though. We are dealers for them. They leave a lot to be desired. My saddle builds won't have all the mistakes as these do.
I made the scabbards. ;)

Lookin good there Duke.
Did you take a minute to read what they had to say about pillars on www.erniethegunsmith.com?
Dude knows of what he speaks. I basically use that same process, except I make the pillars out of tool steel, and have my own process that makes use of my milling machine.
Not many people know about stress free pillar bedding, and Ernie provides detailed instructions right there on his sight. Don't mix your epoxy till you read that.
It would be well worth your while to buy his bedding kit, to get the guided cutter and the first set of pillars. If you have a lathe, or have a goodbuddy that does, you can make the rest of the pillars on the cheap, and just reuse the cutter and guides, but he is quite reasonable on his prices there.
For what its worth....

I apologize duke.
You didn't mention it, and there seems to be no shortage of folks that think bedding compound alone is all it takes to properly bed a stock.
I am especially particular about wood stocks because it's so spongy and can swell and contract depending on the weather, but I don't have enough experience with fiberglass to say if it really makes that big a difference.

No need for apologizes Goodsteel. All is good. I have had an open buddy account with McMillan since Gale did my first tactical rifle in 1977. He was a swell fella.
I'm not sure but I don't know if there is enough meat in the wood for those larges pillars. I might just get some tube stock and knurl it for contact surface adhesion. Well... if my test piece doesn't get crushed. ;)

Talley Quick Detachable Rings. I want to be able to swap rifle scopes to lower power ones whilst on the trail. At least that's the plan. ;)

Here's the bolts Malcolm.
Looks like the shorter one would need to be made from just over 1/16 inch wall tube and the longer one could be 1/8 in wall stock.

Sorry Adam, I should have checked the thread. Looks to me like you need one that is 1/2" in diameter and 1.25" long, and one that is .375 in diameter and 1.00" long, and .255 hole through both. Made of 01 tool steel.

Great project, and I really look forward to seeing more. I wonder if you wouldn't mind showing pictures of the bedding process as it takes place? I have built two sporters on Yugo 48 actions, one is still 8mm that came with a brand new barrel and the other I had a .308 barrel installed. Both were put in Boyd's stocks and I floated the barrels. I've also fitted them with Timney triggers and are they are very nice after having the bolts jeweled, etc. I only have to complete the projects by bedding them and haven't ever bedded a rifle before and after reading and talking to others it sounds like a combination of glass and pillar bedding might be the way to go. I have put a lot of time and money into these projects and want to do this myself, but also want to do the best job I can. Seeing the rifles, saddles along with your story makes me wish I was on your ranch riding a horse with one of your completed rifles in the scabbard, or at least that I was still living in AZ but I guess I feel like that most days! Thanks for sharing your project with us, Duke!

The Wheeler kit works great, doesn't it? I had never considered the effect of torque on scopes from improperly aligned rings until I researched these for installing scopes on several of my father's guns. I had used a 1" blower motor shaft before that that I pulled out of an old furnace and it worked but the kit gets it right on the money. I would never mount a quality scope without it. Nice to see this project step by step Duke!
