We were shooting a 243 rifle, a Rossi single shot, and had a casing split, leaving most of it in the barrel. Only about 1/2" of it came out when opening the rifle. How do I get the rest of the casing out of the barrel?

Try putting a cleaning rod in from the muzzle, attach a 30 cal or 8mm bronze brush from the breech end. Then pull on rod until the brush
is halfway through the case neck and tap gently on the rod handle.Works sometimesYMMV Good luck Mike

I have used a 12mm taper tap to extract cases stuck in the way you describe . Half inch would work as well I believe but have not tried it . The idea is to wind the tap into the case just enough to have it grab . Wind it too far and the tap will cut through the case wall and scar the chamber .
Once the tap grabs , a cleaning rod inserted from the muzzle will remove the tap with the case attached.

A lot of times nothing more than a dental pick is needed, one with 90* bend and a sharp point. Reach into the chamber with it, press it into the inside of the parted casing and gently pull back.

Take a 45 caliber bronze brush, attach it to a sturdy pistol cleaning rod and push it from the breech as far forward into the chamber as you can, then simply pull it out. You'll ruin the brush but it'll cost more to drive to the gunsmith.

One trick Ive used on bolt actions get a dowel rod long enough to reach thru the action and bottom in the case neck shoulder and leave enough to get ahold of. Coat one end with super glue and let cure then lightly coat and insert into tne case bottom out and let set normally a light twisting pulling motion removes it easily. Sometimes a cleaning brush from the muzzle will push them out also. A chamber brush will pull them also. Uless the case failed to catasophic pressures they come out fairly easy ussually
