if i had a modern 4570 single shot, and i had a smith make the chamber longer to fit a 45-90 or 45-110, and lets say the rifle was strong enough, could i handload(if i knew how) loads to shoot the 45 caliber bullet like a 458 Lott or something, because of the larger case capacity? i have never handloaded smokeless, only bp shotguns alot, and i need to learn things. any academic knowledge is appreciated! thx!

What weight of boolit are you wanting to shoot? Reason I ask, I have a bolt action .45-70 that I shoot 540 grainers in. If what you're looking to shoot is that weight or lighter, you wouldn't need to have the gun rechambered. Unless you just want to, which is fine if it's feasable. I'm just sayin'.....

I had a H&R 45-70 Buffalo Classic that I rechambered to 45-120. I could exceed 458WM ballastics with 350g J-words, but the velocity was achieved at the cost of efficiency. The case cap. of a 45-120 is about 118g of h20, about 30g more than a 458WM and about 16g more than 458 lott.

If you want a longer cartridge for your 45-70 and it isn't a break action then you also have to consider how long a cartridge will chamber in your rifle.

There is some published smokeless data for the 45-90 through 45-120 but it is generally close to "trapdoor" pressures. If you want to want to load "ruger #1" levels in a 45-XXX rifle case you are kinda on your own. I know what was safe in my rifle but I wouldn't post it.

those 540 grainers will take African game in a 4570 ive heard.i was just thinking of something like a 458 Lott that didnt cost 3000$ but could perform the same. thanks for your reply

4590 probably be better choice to replicate the Lott, and it may still cycle thru the standard length action.thanks.

With smokeless and heavy boolits you can load up a Ruger #1 or Browning hiwall 45-70 enough to hurt yourself(think concussion). The only reason to lengthen the chamber would be to burn more powder and hurt yourself more quickly. I wouldn't do it.

thanks.i dont think im going to do it.
