Any issues with shooting lead through Shilen ratchet rifling? Getting ready to order a new barrel and I might as well order one that is lead friendly.

One of the hottest rimfire profiles out there.
They are lead

An explaination and photo is in one of the threads. I tried to copy the link, but lost it. Search the site for Ratchet Rifling. The article is about a Martini, and worth reading in addition to learning that ratchet rifling is also referred to as buttress rifling.
Great archives.

From the Shilen web page, traditional on left and ratchet on right.

Hmmm ... looks slightly akin to polygonal rifling. But that has no bearing on safety with cast boolits.

Just out of curiosity, what is the advantage of Ratchet rifling? A good friend of mine has ordered a Shilen barrel for a .338 he building. His explanation of ratchet rifling didn't make sense (until I saw the pic in this thread). It now occurs to me that he never explained why he ordered that particular type of rifling. Thought anyone?

It is also called 5R and Canted rifling. As long as your fit is good, you will not have any problems.

This type of rifling also seems to give higher velocities from what I have seen. In 308 anyway. I had a Rock Creek 5r that was a cut rifled barrel that was on avg about 100 fps faster than the same length in a factory barrel with the exact same ammo.

Obermeyer barrels use 5R ( I think he developed it) and have tight bores as well.

Back on topic-I don't see why you would have any issues with the shilen.

Thanks, the shilen is about $200 less than my next option.
