Anyone have one of the 45-70 Katahdin barrels on there encore? If so how do you like it and what cast boolits have you had good luck with?

I have a Katahdin barrel in .450 Marlin. I use 457122 in it. Not much recoil, but a lot of blast with the brake.

i have one in 45-70 mine does not have porting so full power load feels like a 12ga. the good thing with a 45-70 is there are many loading that will work. i like to use the loads for older guns. but the Katahdin can shoot the higher powder loading for modern lever guns if you feel up to the recoil.

i like the saeco(redding) #017 boolit which is gas checked.

the lyman # 457643 a good one for hunting too.

i like a round ball load for fun. check out this thread --> http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?22804-Round-ball-in-45-70

Thanks for the info up until now I have loaded full velocity 300 JHPs but I find the recoil pretty rough. I am looking at going to a 350gr cast bullet around 1600 fps. I am just wondering if I am going to have a lot of bullet drop at 100yds by adding bullet weight and lowering velocity. Guess ill find out

Another quick question. I have seen in my Lyman book it shows 16" contender loads using 2400 powder. I figure this might be a good option in the short Katahdin barrel has anyone tried 2400?

the ''handgun'' loads are good in the katahdin. as for the drop you'll get with lighter loads it will more then your smaller cal guns but; you'll still be out doing a shotgun or most handguns and you have a lot of knock-down power. practice at the distance you plan to shoot and you'll be fine.
