View Full Version : What's a good alloy/BHN for Lee 310gr GC for deer in .44?

For boolits dropped from the Lee C430-310-RF mold, what would be a good alloy for hunting with a 7 1/2" Super Blackhawk? I'd like to match the alloy to the gun, AND to the game. I'd like something a little softer than acww, would a BHN of 12 to 14 be a good place to start?

Starting loads will be in the 1100-1200f/s range, over 20.0gr LilGun and 22.0gr H110. I think penetration will be good beyond question, and by the time I get an alloy that will match the boolit with the pressure/gun that same alloy will likely offer some expansion as well.

I don't cast right now, I'd like to someday but have some medical issues that will demand most of this summer to treat. I have made a few contacts for getting some of these boolits, and there are several choices in alloy up for discussion.

Your thoughts and opinions would be welcome, I'd be tickled if I could get this kind of performance out of my 7 1/2" Super Blackhawk:

18.5 grains of H110 speed WC 820 and this boolit is the most accurate load I have shot out of my SRH.

Hits with authority also.

Velocity is around 1100 fps

The meplat is really large on this boolit being a WFN so expansion isn't as great of a deal here especially if you are working at the 1200 fps range. I suppose if you want it won't hurt either with a bit of expansion though just not to soft at higher end velocities as you risk accuracy and meat destruction however wound channel would probably be impressive. I would think air cooled WW would be alright at 1200 fps with that GC and if you slow it down to 1000 to 1100 fps then maybe mix 50/50 lead to WW or maybe 25/75 lead to WW. See which one is more accurate.

I am not sure how many deer you would have to align to get that much expansion.

50/50 mix of acww and pure lead might be a good choice..

This one took two, small as they are here it might take 3 or a single deer and a small sapling..
