I think they have the nomenclature a little screwed up. I think they probably meant a .451 bore and 458 groove diameter. I could be wrong. I usually am.

A peek at the link shows that the indicated bbl is 28" long, and over 1" diameter (bull bbl) for a #4 Lee-Enfield rifle.

I might jump on this
i was unaware though that an enfiled had enough length in the action,
or that it could take a round with that large of a rim.

would an enfiled be able to take mid level 45-70 loads?
or would i have to keep them in the trapper range?

I think a No4 can easily handle Levergun loads in 45/70

the No1 is the weaker action, but I think it can still handle 45/70 Levergun loads.

in fact the breech pressure (CIP Pieso) for the Brit is at least 37% higher than the 45/70. More if you calculate the shoulder effect.

the 45/70 can be loaded up to 44000PSI and the breech thrust will be no greater than CIP limits for the Brit.

even the No1 can handle 444Marlin CIP load levels

the question is, can your shoulder handle it?

as for length/rim, a 45/70 SAAMI length is just over 2.5" whereas the Brit is over 3", and the LE bolt/extractor lends itself to larger rims, as it has no ring to worry about, just a flat face, and a spring loaded extractor. As long as the extractor has room in the receiver when chambered, there should be no issues.

now.... getting a Magazine to feed is a whole 'nother ball game.
(I have been lead to understand the 444Marlin feeds from the mag, where the 45/70 needs tweeking, or a single stack mod.

overall, I think they are a worthwhile endeavour, and if 'smiths didn't charge so much up here, I'd consider getting one myself.

I would rather have the .444 marlin since it feeds from the magazine better.

Hmmm. This thread really has me thinking. A 444 on a Lee Enfield action might just be one of the most cast boolit friendly rigs a person could put together. Also a real big game thumper within normal shooting range. I have a No.1 MKIII with a worn barrel that has me thinking project....
