I came across a rare opportunity this weekend and just had to share my good fortune, a Savage 99e in 308. A respected elderly gentleman approached me as he is downsizing and paring down for a future move. Made me feel honored that he thought enough of me to make the offer. He knows I'll give it the care and respect it deserves. Got to hear several old hunting stories in detail too.....he bought it new in '68! And don't ask about price paid. It was one of those I know it's worth more but just want you to have because you'll use it deals. Made my weekend. 76229

CONGRATS - It sure looks pristine - I hope you'll take some pics & post a range report.

I recently traded into a 1967 99E just like it. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine. Nice pick up.

Thanks guys. It cleaned up well but still shows a lot of charchter. It came with a box of reloads. He didn't remember what the load was so I may pull one and see what it looks like. I can't wait to get it out and see what she'll do. I'll shoot some factory ammo first then look to start reloading for it. With the 308 there's such a wide array of loads including some cast gas check loads that i was perusing in my old Lyman manual. If anyone has a pet load for this gun lemme know. Thanks.

I would pull down ALL of the reloads, and start over.

+1, pull down ALL of the reloads.

If it were me, I would skip factory ammo altogether and go straight to the cast loads. Of course, that is after a good bore cleaning. But, that's me. Just sayin'...

It seems like people either love the 99's or hate them, it appears that one has seen some love, hopefully it has found a home.

I know of a few of the 308's that have magically turned into 358's too.

That reminds me of my high school hunting buddy's Savage 99. Just like yours and that was in 68 too.

I hope that she's a shooter for you.

Looks like it needs to go to the range, then hunting. I think you owe this generous gentleman a hunting story or two.
