Howdy....I'm looking for some proven loads using accurate 5744 in an old [1902] 1886 45-70. Just want to have fun shooting cast 300 gr or 405 gr boolits. Not looking for knock em dead loads, just fun 1000-1400 fps loads.
5744 is easier to find here than most any other powder.

5744 is easily found here as well, probably because it has become so expensive compared to other powders.

A 405 gr boolit flying along at 1400 fps will knock most stuff pretty dead.

One heck of a lot of buffalo disappeared at even less speed than that using that round!

Ya, fer sure. I have used a 300gr HP J Word at about 1800 fps....not a fun shoot. You learn pretty quick to place that first shot correctly.

5744 is a great cast powder, unfortunately it has gotten out of my price range!
