View Full Version : 8mm custom 6 cavity/ C326-175-FN group buy: Time to collect orders

Dutch4122

After 45 2.1 has worked his magic on the original Lee C324-175-1R what we now have is something that will shoot better in a wider variety of rifles; and has a meplat for those who want to hunt with this boolit. I decided to go ahead with the FN design when it was obvious from the above poll that it was winning by a 2 to 1 margin over the RN style.

So, it's time to start collecting checks and see how many real orders we're gonna get on this one. Checks will be held until the order goes in to Lee. Cost is $56.00 per mold.

Shoot me a PM here at Cast Boolits or an e-mail to Dutch4122atyahoodotcom and I'll send you my mailing address.

Also, include a slip of paper with you're mailing address and Cast Boolits screen name as well as a phone number I can call if we run into any problems.

This order will go in to Lee at the end of September unless we don't get the minimum 25 molds ordered. If that happens I'll poll those who've already sent in their money and the group will decide what to do.

45 2.1 is going to post the final design on this 8mm custom so please wait to post on this thread until he is able to get the diagram up.

Thanks to those who have already expressed their interest for being patient while we worked this one out. ;)

Dimensioned drawing

Oldfeller

Youse guys might want to consider adding a gas check shank length dimension, a Hornaday gas check snap on note, a lube groove release angle of 45 degrees (stock Lee draft angle doesn't always drop free -- we had to go up to 45 degrees to get 100% drop free on opening the mold) and a lube groove depth dimension. And a note that clearly says "all dimensions fitted to wheel weight metal".

=========================================

If youse guys just let good 'ol Dougie guess for you he can give you a nasty surprise on occasion. At least if it is called out on the drawing you CAN send them back (as Lar had to do when his Hornaday gas checks came off after crimping because LEE screwed up with the fitting metal that they used).

And please remember, Dougie ALWAYS fits to linotype metal unless you flat-ass tell him otherwise, both verbally and on the drawing (that's his second favorite catch all excuse -- it covers all sorts of dimensional errors, undersized noses etc). That assumes he or Pat doesn't play the "standard tolerancing" card on you first.

You may want to specify your tolerancing method to use for bands and nose ------- if you are going to use the default LEE +0 minus .003" tolerancing method then you need to up the size of the nose by .003" and the size of the bands by .003". I used a nominial dimension +/- .001" and I upsized the dimensions accordingly but Lee would go back to their own large .003" negative only tolerance on occasion (habit, I guess).

BTW, Lee may run everything just as small as you accidentally let them.

Example, nose was originally spec'd at .323" +/-.001" on the big 8mm slugs and LEE undersized them .003" arrogantly quoting their standard specs dispite the drawing clearly showing the dimensions as both a critical dimension and stating the tolerance as +/-.001" around a .323"" nominal.

So, Lee will occasionally run a dimension .003" undersized unless you protect yourself clearly on your drawing --- or better yet, just upsize your part a bit to allow for some standard LEE "confusion".

Oldfeller

=============================

Yeah, Jump & Buckshot, you were right -- I couldn't keep my yap shut. Gimme hell, I certainly deserves it fer interfering with them young'uns whilst they'se a taking their turn in the barrel. You could say it was helping them, but you could also say it was interfering with them --- depends on where you sit, I guess. But I feel like they was told, so they won't be surprised by it if it happens to them.

I must've gotten 5 or 6 requests for my snail mail addy already when I got home from work today. I'd say we're not doing too shabby out of the gate.

Keep the requests coming! :)

Oldfeller-

Ya sleep on some rocks before you wrote that? I've went thru this before and will now. Only the Honcho and me see the complete drawing, its much to "busy" (got too many things on it to post) to put here with the limited (none) size editing capabilities on this site. I've tried it several ways and you can't see or read much, so you get something you can see and read. I for one am not going to let LEE design the bullet, they have enough disasters on there hands as it is. All they have to do is be able to read and understand a drawing (and that is something they are getting a near failing grade at presently).

Oldfeller
08-20-2005, 08:25 PM
No rocks to sleep on, just lots & lots of LEE rememberances. Since when don't we post a complete drawing for folks to see before they order stuff? That is a prime bunch of field fertilzer, just you and the Honcho get to see the detailed drawing. You are just pulling my leg again. Every one who participates in a group buy is entitled to a fully disclosed print as they may well need to use it to return a print non-conforming mold to Lee to have it fixed.

And you remember every one of the wee itty bitty screw ups that Dougie did for us over the years so you know durn well why I am mentioning specific drawing details like "fit to wheel weight metal" and "snap fit on Hornaday gas checks" and "tolerancing system" and "draft angles".

Golly Gee Miss Molly, if group mold buy bullet drawings are being done in secret now, then things certainly HAVE changed around this here new list ..... changed a whole bunch.

So, which one -- you or the Honcho or LEE -- assures us that the bullets will drop from the mold and they will pick up a Hornaday gas check and that the bands or the nose portion won't be undersized to the design intent? If you say LEE, then you better show a drawing with sufficent detail for those group buyer somebodys go go back to LEE and make them make it right if LEE screws it up.

Right now your group buy people don't even know what tolerance system is going to be used on that nose or those bands. The LEE default +0-.003" tolerance would have that be a nose that could go down to .317" (too small) and body bands down to what, .323"? That's too small to engage the throat.

And that is IF Douggie uses WW metal to do all the final sizing tuning -- if he uses linotype like he always does unless you tell him not to, take off another partial thousandth to a whole thousanth which would make the slugs just plain undersized (like a stock LEE mold sometimes is).

PS -- you got two mold cutting lathes at LEE now and two operators -- what makes you think the new mold cutting guy (the one who screwed up Lar's FAT 30 build by sizing it with lino) will be covering for us even at the same detail level that Doug used to do ?????

Bob, your old honcho would sweat the fine detail **** like that because he learned that he had to -- the Honcho you got right now is on his first time in the barrel and doesn't even know he has to be worried about it. You might need to prop him up a bit with a more completely detailed drawing, sorta being kindly towards him so to speak. After all, he will be the one holding the bag should it go badly.

Shutting up now, going away (still sending in a check).

"sleeping on rocks".

I liked that one. Sure fits.

Drawing looks fine IMO. I've no 8mm. Why not make the flat in front wider if for a hunting bullet?

Just wanted to make it known that checks are arriving. I'm sure that quite a few more are in the mail:

32127 - (1)
29407 - (1)
84319 - (1)

Like I mentioned before, this one will go in to Lee at the end of September. That should give everybody plenty of time to send a check for those who are serious. Also, that will give us time to iron out the concerns that have been raised by Oldfeller; quite an education for a newbie like me to this process. And, far be it from me to argue or sling mud back and forth with somebody who has "been there and done that" when I'm being given advice.

I'll be the first to admit, I've never designed a custom boolit, or "honcho'd" one of these deals before. 45 2.1 has been doing all the design work for this run. I have given him a few simple design features that I/we want this slug to possess and he has added other design changes that he feels the Lee design needs. In the end I hope as much as everybody else that we are all happy with this 8mm custom.

Dutch, looks like this will be one fine boolit, and my sincere compliments on doing a fine job of handling the order process. I know it's not real easy to keep track of all the comments and distractions, but you're doing fine.

45 2.1, I can't express how much your efforts are appreciated by us "rank and file" members here. You've become the "go to" guy on doing expert designs, and we don't express our appreciation often enough. I hope you aren't feeling like you're being taken advantage of, even though we're taking advantage of you! <GGG> You know what they say: "you always ride the good horse."

My check is in the mail for this mold, and I fully expect it to be one of the best shooting and most versatile boolits I have. I encourage everyone interested to get their checks off to Dutch.

Those who are sitting on the fence or betting on getting any extras might want to play it safe and send in a check before the end of the month. I don't plan on ordering very many extra molds (if any) as I'm in the middle of a kitchen remodel for SWMBO and I won't have much spare time for fielding late orders after this one goes in.

No problem with the delay. I still have email coming in every 2-3 days requesting my address for an order. I don't think running "over" a little is gonna be a problem. I've noticed that a couple of group buys are going in about this time so we'd just end up waiting in line anyway. Who knows, maybe we'll break 40 with this one.

45 2.1 notified me by PM yesterday that the drawing will be in the mail as of today.

I'm going to set the deadline for Monday, 10-24-05. Any checks received after that date will be returned; so if anybody is running late on this one be sure to send a request for my snail mail address in the next couple of days. Otherwise, I doubt the mailman will get it here soon enough. :)

What's the diagram look like? Can we see a drawing? Or have I missed something?:)
Well I don't know what I was thinking when I wrote that! Of course we have a drawing (Post #2) and I DID miss something. Sorry about taking up bandwidth unnecessarily.

Order went in to Lee on yesterday, 10-28-05, for 40 molds. I'll advise when they come in. Nothing to do now but wait. ;)

Just in case somebody who has ordered a mold and for some reason is subscribed to this thread but hasn't seen the thread entitled "8mm custom is in - test cast results." Go to that thread and read it.

If you still want your mold let me know and I will ship it out to you. If you are not happy with the results as provided then advise me and I will arrange a new buyer for your mold; no closing costs involved. ;) I have 6 individuals who have offered to buy refused molds. I have 8 molds at this time whose owners have not notified me of their wishes.

Thanks,
