We had a project at work, and there were some left over pieces of aluminum that I saved from the dumpster. This stuff measures .016" thick and has some white paint or coating of some kind, very thin and tough.

I've never made gas checks before; often thought about it but just haven't dived in since I don't shoot a lot any more and don't have a lot of spare time. I may try it some day, though. I could have brought home a lot more scraps than I did but didn't know if it was worth the hassle. The largest piece is maybe 4'x4'.

If you can get a check maker to run it, it wil work for .277 30 cal 8mm 45 pistol and 44 cal. Now the 277, 30, 8, and 44 normally takes .014-.015 but if the check maker will run the metal they will work with .016 also.

Cool, thanks! I'll hang on to it in case I decide to make checks in the future. For now though I don't think it's worth my time so I'll just buy the few I use.

I would stay away from it personally. Any coating or paint could melt in the barrel and cause issues. I wouldn't mess with it. You could always scrap it, take the money and buy copper checks.

.016 is about PERFECT for .30-.303cal.

If the thin coating of paint is just on one side I don't think there should be any problem. You can just turn the painted side inward.

Even if It is on both sides I still don't see a problem with it. You could always just clean the paint off one side if it was that much of a concern.

There are guys on this site who powder coat their entire bullets and fire them with no problems.

I saw a video on you tube where a guy coats his bullets with a 2 part epoxy paint with a small amount of HBN powder mixed in. The coating does not melt or come off.

No, it is not worth saving! You should put it in a box and get rid of it ASAP! PM me for an address and I will make sure it does not harm you or your guns. ;-))

Just kidding. It should be fine. Good score!
