Star rolling block in .30-30

Well, there always seems to be room for one more .30-30 for me, so this one followed me home. I must admit to having a thing for rolling blocks, when I was very small, Dad started me shooting with a little one in .32-20.

Rifle looks nice. It's a carbine variant with a saddle ring. Seller said it was a pretty good cast shooter from what he did, though he didn't seem to have shot it a whole lot. It's got a neat three leaf flip up rear different distances and holes for a tang sight. Not sure just what I'll do with it yet.

Anyone have experience with these?

.30-30 is a nice tapered cartridge, easy to slip home in a single shot.

The sights aren't real precise and the trigger is a tad heavy, but it's a nice rifle. Very handy with a fairly short length of pull, should be nice when hunting in Winter clothes.

That same rifle followed me home as well. I am going camping later in the week and have spent the afternoon getting some ammo ready. The improvised range we shoot at is very short range so I'm putting together some squib loads. Have some 311.5 120gr cast that I'm going to put 2.5 gr BE under. If they clear the barrel it should be fun and quite. I never meet a RB I didn't want to take home.

I like rolling blocks too. I'm working with a couple of other .30-30s now, so this one will be a paralell development.

Looking down the bore, the rifling seems shallow to me. I wonder how that will pan out for cast? It's going to be a while before I get to a range with mine, I hope she's a shooter.

I tried the 2.5gr load of BE and found it much louder than I expected.
Worked the load down to 1.0gr BE to achieve the noise level I was looking for.
We did not shoot it a lot because it was shooting high with the lowest sight leaf setting.
The hits on paper looked good, not showing any signs of tipping.
The 1.0gr load may work fine in this rifle because of the short barrel.

I have a neat old mold for a plain based, 150 or so grain bullet with a nose shape similar to the 311291. I can't remember the mold # at the moment. Been shooting a few through a bolt action 7.62x39 in hopes of coming up with a good small game load, I may have to try it in the .30-30 next.

Will 1 gain of Bullseye get a bullet clear of the barrel?

Neat little walk around gun, I had one...refinished the stock(band saw & disk grinder gouges),add sights & did trigger job. Shot great with 8-10 gr Unique/Saeco #316 150gr.

I envy you guys! Been looking for a Star RB in .30/30 for some time now. If either of you ever decide to let yours go send me a pm. I'm a lifelong .30/30 shooter and would love to add a star to my current Marlin 336 and Handi-Rifle.

Richhodg66. Would that mold be Lyman 311241? A great mold, PB, for a lite 30/30 load. It's my crow boolit. I need to have it hollow pointed.
