I got some lead from a friend at work. In the bottom of the can was a bunch of J words. I found some .308 diameter FMJ bullets that weigh 166.5 gr. seem to have a magnetic jacket and concave lead base. The canalure is a groove(like a lube groove) Any ideas?
I thought rooskie but the .308 measurement threw me.

Picture?

Boat tails?

I could help potentially identify them, if I had that info.

Who knows, a picture might help- maybe. Magnetic jacket?? Could it have a hardened steel core? AP bullet of some sort?

Some USGI projectiles have steel in them, so are magnetic. The weight makes me wonder if it's one of those bullets. Yeah, odd weight, you'd think, but I've seen that one before.

They look a lot like some Russian 7.62x54r bullets I pulled, but those are 147-8 gr. Hollow base on them was to function in varying bore sizes by fitting a .308 bore and the base upsetting to fit anything bigger.

Without any marking on the tip for AP, my guess is they are copper washed steel jackets. Take a file to one of them. Won't take long to get through copper wash, and even through the jacket.

Ok,
I tried filing on the nose and it seemed steel (cut a deep V)
went to get camera, can't find bullet now. lol
If I want to dissect another one, how can it be done without killing myself?
Can I heat it up and dump the core or cut it with a dremel tool ?
If it is old API what would set it off?

Finnish Pre 1940 bullet. I have a few 38 and 39 year 7.62x54 rounds. They later went to the D-166 round.

My take on them is they aren't USGI. I'd say 7.62x54R myself, and that weight is one they used.

Definitely 7.62 X 54R from Finland. Had several boxes of these that had been imported.
