I have thought about this many many times and came to this thought about it. Unlimited funds for any one removes most of the bumps in the road of life and turns the person into a "observer" of life and no longer a "participant". Obstacles in life make us who and what we are do you overcome them or let them overwhelm you?

I think it would be a bit weird. No work? I would need to find things to keep me busy and hobbies alone wouldn't do it. I could see some volunteer work of some kind. A man needs to do for others or else he becomes overly self involved.

I would buy a plane an fly to where ever it was 40-65 degrees year around no people [except friends ] it is either cold as heck or hot as heck around here. Oh an for a job I would work for the church for free. I will never be rich enough not to work.

Get out of what debt I have, been working on that one for a while. About time I see daylight at the end of the tunnel, somebody builds more tunnel.
Retire, I have enough hobbies to keep me busy and with an abundance of cash, I would create another or two. I have a soft heart and a giving spirit so I would be helping those in need.
Buy more land, good hunting property and put a nice camp on it. Go to a few places that I've never been to. The list goes on.......

What would I do? Buy 15 or 20 acres in the country. Set a doublewide on top of a basement. Construct a 100 meter range with cement bench. Build a 2 stall garage with small shop to putter in, steel building BTW. New cars, NEH my Ford Escort 2001 and KIA Reo 2003 work just fine and get good gas mileage.

Rest would all be invested with all interest funneled into charities upon my wife and I's death. Principal? Split up between my 2 daughters.

Not much I need or wish for any longer. I'm pretty happy just as I am.

Get rid of my family members, close friends and my own debt. Then I would buy a few square miles of land somewhere in the mountains and have a compound for me and my friends. They would no longer be working as they would be on my payroll. What good is having all that money if there is no one to spend it w/. After that it's do whatever we feel like. There are plenty of places in the world I would love to see so I'm sure we would be traveling all over for a few years.

Much as Bin Laden did, i would finance fighters that stood for principles I believed in. I would lobby and buy enough senators and representatives to enact legislation promoting coal, local foods, US fur, US jobs and rewrite environmental laws to be fair and based on real science. I would make sure violaters of such enviromental laws were put on chain gangs from the CEO's on down. I would finance adequatly staffed hospitals with in a 45 minute drive of every US city over 5K.
I would reform welfare laws and finance healthy foods for the former recipents along with adequate training for work.
I would start a manufacturing business making Win 94's in 25-35 and 7-30 Waters, Savage 99's and K frame S&W's. Then I would work on the rest of the world. After that I would dig into a rare Rib Steak.

First off, buy and improve a few acres in a couple locations outside of Illinois...one to the north and another far to the southwest. Second, there are several social service and political groups I support - not all 'conservative' or even 'pro-gun' - for which I would establish trust funds with the stipulation that I would have oversight of how the money was spent . Third, build homes on those lots so we could live somewhere the wife could be comfortable year-round...she has problems with extreme temperatures. And last, on the day we move out, send the Governor of Illinois, a copy of my bank statement with a note attached suggesting that he might kiss a portion of my anatomy that's never been exposed to direct sunlight.

Start a philanthropical (sp?) trust and spend the rest of my years giving money away to good causes and people that deserve help(put alot of kids thru college). Spend a bunch to counter all the liberal money in politics, buy an airplane and a helicopter (learn to fly it). Set up trusts for a few relatives, buy some land and have a place to hunt for me and a friend or two. Move somewhere. Build me my own private golf course next to the house, with a stocked lake and my own range (2000yd) next to it. Drill some oil/gas wells. Donate to my alma matters. Put my neighbors kid thru college as far as he wants to go (smart kid!!). Donate to the Castboolits site and a few others, so they never have to raise funds to operate. Donate a bunch to cancer research and to womens shelters , along with partners, and habitat for humanity. Fund NASA again.(trekkie here). Other things I haven't thought of yet. Oh, go and see a Red Sox game in Fenway, been 52 years since I have done that.

Pay off debt, buy 200-300 acres, raise livestock (chickens, pigs, cattle, rabbits, sheep), tend garden, and live off the land. That's my life dream. I want to live off my land, well fish in public water. I don't want to buy groceries, I want to grow, raise, and hunt my food.

There's some changing of hands going on/being talked about with my inlaws' 140 acre farm right now that my BIL lives on. If I won the lottery, I'd pay off my debt and swap houses with him. I'd pay off the farm and live there and he and his fiance can have my house in town here. I'll knock down the house on the farm and build a new one with wood from trees on the farm.

Bill

Back in the '50s, as a teenager, I met a well-off gent who owned a VERY plush "cabin" in the remote bush of northwestern Ontario.

He had a Catalina/PBY which he used to fly up from Minneapolis area, and it was a fantastic machine. It had bunks, and a galley. Each waist blister had a big comfy recliner chair, and each chair could be moved aside to allow opening the blister so that it could be used as a casting position. A 12-foot boat and motor was recessed into the underside of each wing, with electric winches to haul the boats out of the water.

Very impressive, to a youngster like me.

Convert those radials to turboprop. Always thought the PBY was one of the coolist planes, along with the lightning.

pay off debt, buy and learn to fly an airplane open a college fund for all children of close friends and
extended family, donate heavily to all causes I believe in.

Build the a huge collection of firearms and a warehouse/indoor range to store/shoot them, on a large private cattle ranch somewhere in the rocky mountains with plenty a deer and elk hunting. Then just raise cattle and horses until the rest of the money runs out.

BruceB and popper,

I have seen a couple of Catalinas made up like you say. One had a boat attached to one wing
like you said, and the waist blisters as window seats.

As to the turboprops, I have considered that an it is probably a good idea from both reliability
and fuel availability standpoint. Kerosene or diesel is a lot more available than high octane avgas
in the backwaters of the world.

I suppose if I am going to win the lottery, I may have to buy a ticket. . . . . . ;-)

Yes, the turboprop conversions make a lot of sense... if you have the bux.

The Dehaviland Beaver, a very popular bushplane, originally was powered by the P&W 985 (think that's the number), a 450HP radial. DHCanada came out with the "Turbo Beaver", using the PT6 turboprop engine of something over 600hP. With no increase in weight, the performance was vastly improved. ( I always thought it looked like a rat, with the extended, tapering nose.)

The airplane was placarded against landing with fuel in the wingtip tanks. One day, this led to my wife and I chartering for a 40-mile flight that took almost three hours! We knew the pilot, and the aircraft had been fully fueled the night before for a MUCH longer flight.

Due to the vagaries of chartering and aircraft availability, we ended up with this one for our short moose-hunting hop. We spent the time touring the hunting area at VERY low altitude for an entertaining two hours or so, burning off the fuel in those tip tanks.

Nice airplane.

Buy enough land in a western state that I wouldn't ever have to worry about my neighbors. But it isn't all about me. I would do my part to see that those working in distilleries in Scotland and America will always have a job.

Buy a place in the country, build a single story house with a basement that has an elevator. Being disabled it would sure make it easier on my spine than climbing the 45 degree steps this old house has. Put together a diesel truck with no electronics for SHTF use, keep my current little car for running to town. Food and supplies to feed my entire extended family(40 people plus/minus friends of nieces/nephews). Pay of my extended families bills and setup college funds for all the younger ones, and a trust fund for future college needs.

Once my family was set I would continue doing what I already do, help those in need who really need it. Like a friend who recently lost a job and her house. She stayed with me for free for 4 months until she found a new job. I helped with her first/last months rent and damage deposit for an apartment in that town. Do the same for other friends be it a meal, someone to talk to, little cash til payday etc. Help those who try to help themselves and are just unfortunate and down on their luck in this economy. I do this on my fixed SSDI income and it isn't easy.

Pay off the national debt, evict current White House resident and all his acquaintances, hire someone we all like as Pres, buy Montana, hire people to watch my borders, buy a serious gun collection including artillery pieces along with those who know how to operate them, build and hire those to run my own armory for ammo and the like, bring some friends and family to enjoy it with me, normal investments so all my prodigy can be lazy (not, no welfare on my dime). ...........then............play!

I would do what a lot of billionaires are doing, starting my own space travel company. I would have a space station way bigger than the international space station that was capable of leaving low earth orbit and hope to be able to get it built and moved to lunar orbit before I die. With unlimited cash I would be limited by the availability of smart capable motivated people. If enough of the right people could be found I would work on a self-sustaining lunar colony as well. I would hire Elon to do my launches and help him grow his business and maybe he will then be able to make progress on his goal of a Mars colony.
