I stumbled onto one at a very fair price this past weekend and couldn't pass it up. It has been well loved but seems tight and has a good bore and chambers. There is a very slight flame cutting line on the topstrap but just enough catch a fingernail on.

Looks like Remington is the only source of brass as best as I can tell. Anybody shooting one these days or all they all being used for heavy caliber conversions. I like the idea of shooting heavier lead boolits out of it at moderate velocities, rather than screaming lighter jackets slugs. Any comments or suggestions?

Thanks,
Danny

Had one long ago, unbelievable accuracy. I shot a 39 out of 40 first time out, new gun with no sight settings at an IHMSA shoot. I used a 200 gr bullet and 4227.
The cut only goes so deep and stops but it ruined sales.
You have a jewel there.

Glen Fryxell has a good article about this gun/cartridge at the LASC web site.

It is still a great cartridge in use in Contenders and Handi-rifles.

Reloadammo website shows a plinker load of 6-7 gr Unique for 158 gr boolit. I use 4227 a lot with 180 grainers in full on hunting loads. Check the web or other sources as I have never used Unique in the Max.

I shoot maximum, but not in a revolver. I've done contender and my H&R .357 Maximum. 8)

180 - 200 gr with 4227 Ruger or will try 1680/680 because my DW 455 like that ...

Greetings
No Ruger but a Dan Wesson. Super shooting cartrige. Everything the caliber .357 is with a 200 grainer instead of a 160. Have not used less than a 180 griner in mine. 296, 5744 and 1680 work nicely. The DW has a longer cylinder so you will have to watch long nosed Cast sticking out in the Ruger.
Had Rugers been fed heavy boolits they would have soldiered on for many years but people panicked and all the rest is history.

Another problem was some .357 bullets were too fragile and the core could be shot out of the jacket. Same with the .454 when it came out.
Yet the Max is still one of the best. The caliber has accuracy written all over it.
