Looking to load up some 454 Casull loads tonight.

On hand I have virgin brass, some GC lead bullets with a penta HP that weight 306gr sized lubed with GC and 1 pound of W296 and 100 Federal small rifle primers. I'm looking for a medium hot load for this to see what the 454 is all about.

I also have some 250gr XTPs that I'd like to load up but can't find good load data for it in the 454.

What would y'all suggest for starting and max way points.

For giggles I also have some 255gr Hornady "cowboy" lead bullets and some trail boss.

With the LBT 300grgc lfn i have had excellent results from 3 FA revolvers with 28grs of 296 @1,450 fps

For the Hornday 250 gr XTP made for the 45 lc velocties! not for loads much over 1,400 fps with the 454 casull i have found that 26grs of mil surplus WW820 @1,340 fps works well from my revolvers

For loads in the 1,000 fps range with cast bullets i have had good results with Tightgroup powder with 260 , 275 and 300 gr cast bullets . i use 8.0 grs @1,000 fps with the 260gr bullet , and with the 275 & 300 gr bullet 9.0 grs @1,100 fps. as there more accurate with that charge , I also use small pistol primers not small rifle primers with Tightgroup powder. with these reduced loads

I loaded up just a tad more W296 under those 305 grainers. Based on research it seemed people were using anywhere from 28-33 grains of 296/110 under that weight of CB. Ill see how she runs. Need to get a new chrony. It will help with record keeping

As far as the XTP I was gonna clean up some 45LC cases and just load using published data for those. It'll keep the velocities down and still will be fun

Thanks RobS. That Hodgdon manual is a great reference, especially or jacketed stuff.

You are welcome. Here is another alternative but take it with some caution as some loads could be a max load for one person's firearm and then turn around and blow up another person's gun. Work up loads as you go.
