Here is a coupe of 44's I have been playing around with.

I shot half a dozen bullets into a big old wet honey locus log at two different sections. With the data have, it should be well over 200 yards before that bullet hits the 900fps mark. In fact, It should still be moving around 1075fps at 100 yads. Not to shabby IMHO...

Left-air cooled WW at 900 fps

Right-air cooled WW at 1200fps

NICE! A pretty reliable test of boolit performance I have found is to soak a couple 1" thick sections of phone books in water overnight. Put a gallon jug of water between them, and shoot through them. I bundle them together with duct tape to hold everything in place. Wound channels are extremely similar to actual on game performance. This setup simulates a broadside shot on a deer sized animal pretty well. You can put a piece of 1/4" plywood in the middle of the first phone book to simulate a shoulder shot as well.

Adding 2% tin to your COWWS and then begin to cut it with pure lead at 10, 20 and 30% will give better results (not that yours are bad:smile:) The tin will make the alloy less brittle and the lead will soften it for better expansion yet. Soften it to the point just before accuracy begins to deteriorate with your load at 1200 fps.

Thanks gents. The tree was deteriorating and a good media source.

Larry, your comments make me want to start adding tin to pure lead. From memory, I think Elmer's mix was 7% tin.

Look at it this way, I am one of the crazy fools that is actually doing bullet testing on his own bullets. LOL

Larry, your comments make me want to start adding tin to pure lead. That also is an excellent way to make very good HP'd .44 cast bullets. Cast some with 30-1, 20-1 and 16-1 alloy and test for accuracy with your load. I use 16-1 out of my .44 magnum and other handguns (45-70 and .50 cal ML rifles also) but have velocities in the 1350 - 1600 fps range. Expansion is excellent in soppy wet newsprint and deer, elk, pigs, etc.

From memory, I think Elmer's mix was 7% tin. Elmer favored 16-1 quite a bit.

A few of us are also "crazy" and do the same thing. Enjoy.......
