I am rebuilding my old SAECO pot. I have repaired the element and am getting a new temp controller. I have also fabricated a new shield around the element.

The question is: Can I use insulation from a water heater to insulate the pot or does it have to be something special? It has taken much work to get it this far and just want to get it right the first time. I am almost ready to close it up.

Thanks, Vinne

I doubt it. Water heater insulation is usually fiberglass and is good only up to around 500 F...above that it may ignite. Won't go up in flames but will smoulder and emit lots of stinkin' smoke. (Don't ask how I know.) You'll do much better using some variety of 'rock wool' or furnace insulation. If you know a plumber or HVAC guy, as him for a handful of the highest temp-rated insulation he has in his truck.

I scavenge wire and insulation from self cleaning ovens.

Thanks...I will look into both of those.
