Has anyone had any luck shooting cast bullets designed for a gas check, without the gas checks?

Basically, two questions.

1. Accuracy

2. Leading

Thanks,

Paul

Yes. My experience is limited to handgun ammo, all my rifle boolits wear gas checks. Usually the accuracy is reduced somewhat, leading can be controled by limiting the velocity and making sure the boolit is big enough. I've used the Lee .44 caliber 310 grain and brother .45 caliber 320 grain barefoot at velocities up to 1200 fps. with excellent results.

can be done but ive never got guilt edge accuracy doing it. If a bullet is designed for a check I use one.

I was thinking about getting in on the Lee GB 6 cavity- 478-378gr LFNGC group buy bullet. I was thinking that if I could use this bullet for big bore plinking/practice at about 1,100 fps without the gas check, it would be perfect for my needs.

Lloyd, I noticed you are in on this group buy -- do you happen to know the crimp to nose length -- from crimp grove closest to nose? I have a Freedom Arms .475 and it has a short cyl, limiting OAL.

Thanks,

Paul

Sorry, the crimp to nose length is listed on the group buy thread. It will work in the Freedom Arms .475.

This is not absolute or anything like that but I shoot the same 200 gr. gas checked bullet in my Swiss K31 and my M/N 91/30. This is with the same powder and load.

I tried both with gas checks and both without gas checks and so far I have found that my K31 shoots about the same with or without the gas check while accuracy in the 91/30 was worse without the gas checks.

I know that there are various things to consider but so far this is what I have experienced at this time.

I load plinking loads (800fps)for my 500S&W with a 440grGC Lee mold. I have shot both with and without a GC. Both shoot well, but with out the gas check I get more lead in the comp area and have to clean the comp after each days shooting. With the GC on the boolits, the comp is near lead free and I just clean the barrel and wipe it down.

I have not fired GC free boolits from my 20" Encore rifle yet, but plan to test them soon.

I've done it in 44 revolvers at medium to low velocities (800-1200fps), and they worked fine bare-footed (I'm unashamedly stealing that 454PB, as it's too good not to use! :drinks: ). Basically, it's a lot like shooting a bevel base bullet with a weird shaped bevel.....

like paul said that bullet is designed for the FA gun. Acutally it came about on my want for a bullet for my 475 custom marlin that actually needs a nose shorter then a FA gun. Thats why we designed it with two crimp groves. If i were looking at what you want id consider buying one and having the gas check shank reamed out of 3 of the cavitys. I might do that with one of mine.

Lloyd,

How would I go about having the gas check shank reamed to plain base config?

Thanks,

Paul
