View Full Version : My 1911 'bear load'

Jim

Janet and I saw a bear around our place recently. That got my to thinkin' I might better work up a load for that to fit my new 1911.

I figgered shootin' a bear would require a heavy boolit, so I ran a 540 grain .45 caliber rifle boolit through a .452 sizer die. I filled up a .45 ACP case with bullseye, but had to pour a little back out 'cause the case bulged when I tried to seat the boolit.

It won't go down in the magazine, so I figgered I'll just carry one in my pocket and hand chamber it. I oughta' do OK with just one anyhow, right?

So, whadda' ya' think guys, pretty good, huh? :bigsmyl2:

Jim,
I think that should do it. It might even be an even match for the odd dinosaur that might wander through Floyd. It might be a booger to chamber though.
Just keep a hammer handy to close the slide and you should be good to go.

I suppose one shot is all you'd need, but I'll bet it's all you'd get.:D

I think bullseye might be a tad slow for that combination...:kidding:

Jim, never let an opportunity to buy another pistol get away, you need a .45 Colt now, it can be your "Bear Gun". You might even be able to use that boolit???

Damn, when did you get the barrel rechambered for that monstrosity. Here how you use it:

1) Let bear get REAL close.
2) Get him to open his mouth.
3) Stick the entire gun in his mouth.
4) Pull the trigger and rank your hand out REALLY fast.

Ought to work, but you will screw up the mount.

Jim, that bullet will never work it is round. You need to take a hacksaw to the front and make it flat.

Is there actually any space for powder or is the cartridge external combustion?

Awesome I am anxiously awaiting the range report. Jim are you considering mass producing these for sale until it becomes standard factory offering ? If so I will be by the phone with credit card ready! LOL FB

The lube groove is empty, or are the other two in the case filled? Quite frankly I'd have figured your New Zealand hunting uniform would have scared the tar out of him.:D

I'm thinkin' our old friend Evan Williams had something to do with the load design, hope you'll give him partial credit. Just keep him out of the loading room, OK?

The boolit is coated with my secret invisible lube! See, I got that idea from Waksupi. If he can sell lube grooves, I can make invisible lube to put in 'em!

Jim, I'm thinkin that bear load would also work well on your nuclear raccoons and European "attack" beavers!!!!

Man, y'all ain't got no idea how big the critters are up in these hills. Biggest 'coon I ever seen was tryin' to carry off my trash can one night. I went outside with my Gibbs and he took it away from me!

I had to go back inside and get the BIG gun. Below is a pic of the empty sittin' next to a loaded .45-70. That oughta' give ya' some idea of what ya' gotta' have to handle REAL 'coons.

I think you should use pure Nitro Glycerin to load that that way you will tenderizer the meat* for the bear!
I did switch to the model 29 earlier this year when i had a bear around it visited twice then moved on. The neighbor wanted to put a full clip from his AR in it i am sure that would do the job but would prefer the Garand he has for such a purpose.

* yep that would be anyone holding the gun! What a terrible waste of a 1911 that would be.

That Gibbs looks like you use a trash can for a powder scoop. Careful shooting a coon with that, may burn the tree down.

If the 'coon's treed, I just shoot in the ground at the bottom of the tree. It dislodges so much dirt, the tree just falls over and we let the dogs get 'im.

If that'un don't work maybe this'un will. The Lyman 535 Postal. It will hold a little more lube so it won't lead the barrel.

Someone said he thought that bullseye was to slow, my 1911 liked Norma R1 better

That's how I lost my first chrony. I had it 15 ft. away from the table like the directions say, but the muzzle blast fried the display panel.

Jake, will you lend me that mold? I wanna cast up 'bout a thousand with my 250 BHN alloy.

Powder? I thought that Gibbs would burn nitrated charcoal.......

Did you throw the gibbs bullet at the raccoon. I do not think it is required to actually shoot it just the weight of it thrown at the coon should have killed it!

Geez that would be about 75 LB of lead just for 1000 rnd. One thing about it, ole jim won't never know if he got the bear, who is gonna volentere as to what is bear meat and what is Jim meat? After that explosion I should hear it in Tn.

I didn't see an April 1 date for the OP, so am I correct that the primary cash crop in Floyd County hasn't changed since I was last there, or are you in the OTHER Floyd in Tidewater, where they grow peanuts, hogs and coton, rather than Mary Jane and Monshine....I'm dating myself.

I can hear the bears and coons talking now.

"OK, one of us is gonna go out and draw his fire. The rest of us will just sit back and watch the show when that guy with the purple pants pulls the trigger."

For dangerous game I prefer shot placement over brute force that's why I would opt for the 7.62 micro whisper! I should mention however that 2.5 grains of any powder is a compressed load! YMMV

I like it . Some might say a tad on the large side... Much bigger than these minuscule 380 gr paper patched 454 loads but then, these are only for cubs, not big old bears. ;-)

Ok, I know my imagination can get away from me at times but we have, at our disposal, an Urban Legend in the making. Make a picture of a bearzilla (you know, like all the hogzilla ones we've seen), the bearzilla missing half it's head, Jim with some hand injuries from shoving his hand in the mouth after chambering one round by hand in his custom 9" 1911 with a special chamber just for this cartridge. We just need to make sure Jim is wearing them fancy duds when the media shows up to interview him. Should be able to ride that wave for years!

That ought to work just fine.
Just show that round to that bear and he will laugh his self to death.

Great looking round, should do a number on a bear, only question is how do you get said bear to shoot it... :kidding:

For anybody reading this thread, who might take it seriously, don't! It is a joke. A round like that over a case full of Bullseye, if it could be chambered, which is unlikely, would disassemble a 1911 pistol with one shot.

I used to live(1988-2006)in C-burg,and would have let you borrow my wrist rocket sling shot. That way you could have added more powder. Sadly I hope your throwing arm is in good enough shape to throw it far enough at the bear to promote you speedy escape if the deadly critter re-emerges. I could have loaned you my Grandmother if she would have decided to drink from the fountain of youth. She would use the standard caliber straw broom to actually beat them away in northern New Mexico(Red River)at the cabin.Do you have a large caliber broom that you could use?
