I bought this Russian Captured Obendorf 1941 K98 Mauser from Dan's Ammo several years ago. It has a pristine bore and I hope to get a decent load worked up for it. I had Dean of DGR refinish the stock, and he did a pretty nice job of it for $75. The S&K scout mount for my Leupold 4x pistol scope was shooting 10" high at 50 yards. I sent it back and they re-machined it and I'll have to go back to the range to confirm that it is corrected. I read from another posting here that the Leupold scout rifle scope is the way to go because the pistol scope's eye relief is too long(yes it is). I am looking to sell the Leupold pistol scope and upgrade to the scout.

Great looking combo. Can you show a close up of the scope mount?

Have any molds for it?

Thanks

The "byf" indicates that it was made by Mauser's Oberndorf factory and of course the 41 is the year of manufacturer. You can also look for the "Waffenamt Drueke" (inspection office acceptance stamps) on the barrel and receiver. They look like a Whermacht eagle holding the office number for each factory. Without looking at my byf Mauser, I believe that the Mauser Waffenfabrik at Oberndorf used the code WaA135. It should be on the barrel and the left side of the receiver. You can see the top portion of it in the photo you show of the left side of the receiver. It's just in front of the serial number.

The bolts on the Russian capture/imports are not original to the receiver (perhaps by accident maybe), but they have the serial number of the rifle electro engraved on the bolt body which leads me to believe that the importer at least checked the headspace.

I bought one of these in the early 90s (CE 44 Code made by Sauer) as a shooter and I've never regretted it. With Sierra jacketed bullets it is a 1 1/2 MOA rifle all day long even with a dark bore that is otherwise still pretty sharp and un-pitted and to my eye, un-worn.

Sad I know they will never have the extreme collectors value of a bringback but the RC's are a historical K98 all the same - I wouldn't have refurbed the stock. Though it looks very nice it now has zero collectors value! But hey it's your rifle enjoy! My RC had a totally worn out barrel - I got lucky an bought a Barreled action to get a great shooter going, love shooting it!

Gunnut- I kind of figured that RCs don't hold much collector's value anyway. The bore is beautiful and the Russian bluing is consistant and clean, so I thought that the stock would look better refinished, aside from the fact that I did not like the crappy red shellac from the Russian armory. It was not the original stock anyway. The cleaning rod hole was not drilled and the serial number was re-stamped in the stock. The one thing about the refinishing job that I didn't like is that Dean sanded the serial number out of the stock. You're right, it's my rifle and I enjoy how it looks now. The most important thing for me now is to get a decent load worked up for it.

For a Boolit load I use the Lee 175 gr GC over 16 gr Unique a mild load with decent velocity great plinking an light hunting load. Also use the NOE 205 gr GC with 41.5 gr IMR 4350. And if you want to dupicate a military load try and find some Privi 198gr FMJ BT they are supper accurate in mine.

lyman 323470 neck sized, with light loads of SR-4759, Unique or IMR-4227. See the Mr. Harris article. For the Karabiner and Maximum you can experiment with 4895 and slower powders.

I just got a new Leupold 2.5x28mm FX-II scout scope and installed it. It definitely feels much better veiwing through it than the 4x M8 pistol scope did. Now it's to the range to see what it can do! I'm going to start out with some M75 196gr Prvi Partizan sniper ammo dated 1999 that I picked up from Wideners. I have read that it is pretty decent and consistant 8mm ammo, and I am thinking that it's the ammo that Gunnut 45/454 is talking about.

For junkbug's benefit, here is a close-up of my S&K scout mount.

175 grain RN FP GB Boolit pushed by 21.5 grains of milsurp 4759 did well for me. Move up to 22.5 and it looked like buckshot pattern at 50!

Worn_holster:

You'll find a disparity between shooting factory j-words and cast boolits to be about 1 foot or so in elevation at 100 yds. I don't know how that translates to your new scope. To avoid monkeying with the sites each time I change from "j"s to cast and back again, I find a load that works and stick with it.

Since I am not up and rolling on the rifle gas check boolit production yet, I just wanted to shoot some ammo known to be consistantly accurate which is why I bought 90 rounds of the PP sniper ammo.

I found a nice tutorial on how to get greater accuracy from an old Mauser. I applied the technique and I'll see the results tomorrow at the range.

Here are three targets shot at 100yds with Prvi Partizan M75 FMJBT 196gr sniper ammo today from a bench rest. I took apart my Mauser yesterday and applied the technique outlined in the tutorial. I am amzed at what this old RC Mauser can do. There were even a few shots touching WOW! Now I need to work up some boolits that give me some of the same!

I have installed a Huber 2-stage Match trigger to my byf Mauser, and I'm headed to the range tomorrow to see what group size improvement I get with the much improved trigger pull.
