I think I'll have to go back again!74946

The little bluegill in my left hand was all my friend managed to catch.

I happened on those three nice largemouth.

Pretty good morning, now to stay away from the 113 degrees for the rest of the day!

Far enough south, just too far west!

I'm right near St. George.

At least the one looks like a Small Mouth Bass

Single horizontal stripe on each, no vertical striping.

I'm no fish expert, but I believe that makes them largemouth.

Supposedly there are smallies in that lake too.

Well as the "resident fish biologist" I agree with Brandon, at least the two I can see well. Good to see somebody eating bass! The catch and release ethic can make fish management challenging at times.

ahh.
okay, I know that area fairly well.
I did a lot of work in St. George, Cedar City, and Washington a few years back.

With the small amount of meat on these relatively large fish, I think I need a recipe for chowder.

Run, from what I understand, you have much the same terrain up there, just cooler weather?

Were they caught at that big lake over by the fairgrounds ( I forget the name) or one of the other local lakes like Gunlock Res.? I looked them over a couple years back and thought the lakes looked good (except for all the water-skiers).

You're probably thinking of Quail Creek Reservoir, by the fairgrounds.

This was at Sand Hollow Reservoir, just a few miles away.

I need to go try Gunlock Reservoir, see how the fish are doing after they all but drained it a few years ago.

It is even closer to home, and has bass, crappie, bluegill, and catfish.

Did you see the size of the bluegill in my left hand???

That seemed to be one of the larger ones in the lake!!!

I'd rather pick the bones of a tiny bluegill than suffer the bland taste of a large mouth bass.

But, if you're gonna dredge it in cornmeal and deep fry it, it doesn't make any difference what kind of fish it is, it tastes like deep fried cornmeal.

Not a bad catch at all. My buddy and I tried a new fishing hole last night. Went out a few hours yesterday evening in the rain and between the two of us we caught 5 channel cat between 3 and 5 pounds. I normally don't like fishing in the rain but I will put up with just about anything for a mess of catfish.

Best wishes,

Joe

around this area the terrain is all mountainous with pine trees, cedar trees, sagebrush, and such.
the St. George area is more like south of here towards rock springs with the butte's and bluffs.
soda is a bit more like cedar city and east of cedar city.

Run, sounds like a nice place to be!

Joe, I'd fish in the rain most any time, as long as I don't have to fish in the wind!
