I took my Tender with the 30-30 barrel on it out to shoot yesterday. What fun.
I forgot how well it shoot lead.
I have a 4X Leupold LER scope on it.
Gotta be one of the best cast boolit TC barrels yet.
I shoot a light and a heavy cast loads in it depending on the distance I want to shoot it....dale

SO FAR I've had 3, 30-30 barrels . A 10" and 2 -14" barrels. The 14" barrels had differing twist rates. They all shot cast with at least some accuracy. The 10" was very finicky about what it would shoot. The one 14" has a slow (1in 14) twist. The other is a faster twist. It will do OKAY if I do not push to hard. I tried 180-185 grainers in the 10", I thought they'd do great on the rams, but they keyholed and accuracy was NON existent at over 125 yards.!

I had my 30-30 "Reeder-ized" to 30 GNR; Love it!

OK - What's a .30 GNR? Never too old to learn.

.30 GNR is a wildcat from

30 GNR
Next up is a virtual duplicate of the 7 GNR except it is in 30 caliber. The 30 GNR is an improvement over the 30-30 Improved. It is formed by shooting the 30-30 in it's chamber. Equal to the 300 Savage, it is great on deer-sized critters. Any 30-30 Contender or rifle can be rechambered to this cartridge.

The dies from Gary are Redding and he suggests using 300 savage starting loads as a guide.
I was turned off by the short neck - don't like that for cast boolit loading for hunting rounds.
Once upon a time I had a 30-30 Ackley Improved - liked it pretty well.

Now that is neat. Thanks for posting Artful.
I bought a 30 Herret with an eye towards Whisper type loads, but the thing shoots lighter bullets so well at higher velocities. Still playing & just got a 115 gr mold to try. Boolits sized & ready. Cases waiting for some bench time.

Thanks for the lesson, Artful. Very nicely done. If my .30-30 didn't do everything I want, I'd be interested. Just love the .30-30, and the .30 Herrett & .35 Herrett variants, too. My deer and black bear don't require more than I already have, but if I were after lions, & tigers, and "big" bears, Oh my!
Even in my dotage, leaning makes me smile.

Did you shoot cast from that 14 inch, 1 in 14 twist barrel?
I have some 150 gr cast coming for my 14" 30 40 Krag barrel that is also a 1 in 14 twist. I'm hoping for 2200 fps WITH accuracy.
