I've concluded my redding 45-70 crimp die is too short to produce a roll crimp that I can't easily overcome with my thumb. I removed the lock nut & ran it all the way down, to no avail. The Dillon tool head is 1.0625" thick. I ordered a Lee Factory Crimp Die the other day.

Pls. comment for guidance. Thanks.

The crimp isn't enough to keep you from pushing the bullet deeper into the case?
That means you also lack enough neck tension. The crimp is just the icing on the cake, neck tension is what should be doing the heavy lifting.

What diameter bullet? Does it almost slip into the case with no resistance? Are you full length sizing?

That sounds to me like the case is inadequately sized. I've seen this issue before when a sizing die is used to neck-size tapered cases. Try running your sizer die down, with the ram up on your press, until it just touches the shell holder. I'll not be surprised to hear that fixes the problem.
