I'm thinking maybe it's possible to ream the rifle in 450 Marlin and still be able to use cases made out of H&H based cases like the 458.win magnum case just like I would for the 458X2"?

Is it right that the only difference between the 450 marlin and 458X2" is the wider magnum belt on the 450 marlin?

I can't answer the specifics, but the Marlin belt is wider/ deeper. I sure have no complaints about the 458x2 though. My hornady dies fit and resize just fine. I went with the 458x2 to avoid the weird belt on the Marlin. Belted mag brass is everywhere.

One other difference is that the Marlin is .100" longer in case length. And no, with the deeper belt depth, the primer will never be hit hard enough to go off, if you make cases from a standard belted case (this round headspaces on the belt, not the mouth).

.450 Marlin brass at the belt is same OD as H&H brass. The belt is, however, longer to prevent its chambering in firearms chambered for H&H cartridges.

To alter a M1895 .450 Marlin to accept H&H brass -- that is, to become chambered for .458-2 or clone -- the barrel must be turned at its breech, then rechambered for H&H belt.

Having done this, .450 Marlin brass/ammunition will no longer chamber.

Is this a textbook case of waste effort?

Make a head space ring for your Marlin and you will be able to use belted cases trimmed to length.
