My boy inadvertently let my 336 30/30 slide down on to the semi buckhorn after he cleaned it and broke it...( he was devastated, but told me exactly what happened) . He said " I broke your tack driver". Anyway, this gave me a chance to put a receiver peep sight on it ( and I got the wings as this is a saddle scabbard/ truck working gun), and it shipped yesterday. I had chnaged the front sight to a tiny low blade and dot in order to get low velocity 1500 fps up at one hundred yards. It ran all the way down with hunting loads and all the way up with cowboy loads. this was an ideal set up and a real tack driver for a lever gun. I am now worried that I will be shooting WAY high with hunting loads and high with plinkers even with the rear elevation all the way down. The front sight is about .38 from the bbl to the top. Anybody have any experience with the skinner in a 336 30/30? Will I need to change out the front sight again for a taller blade. I really like the 1/16 ( i think thats right) dot. It allows for a precise sight picture for me.
Thanks!

Why not ask Skinner directly. I talked to him when I did my Rossis up with his peep sight. I am sure he will give you good advice.

Take Care

Whenever I add a Skinner peep to a gun I always get a new front sight. It makes guessing if I need one easier. Get the tall one and file it down to where you need it.

Yes you will need a new front sight. I just added a winged Skinner peep to my 336 and now I have the matching winged front sight on order.

I installed this cool sight last night and started at 25 yards. 10 of unique behind a lee 309-170 gc wwwd 6 inches low with the rear sight all the way down; 24 of imr 3031 under the same boolit hit 2-3 inches low; 30 of imr 3031 hit 3 inches high-- all were 3 inches left. I moved the sight right and went to one hundred... The 24 imr 3031 hit 3 inches low about a 2 inch group group; 10 of unique hit six inches low about a 2 1/2 inch group; the 30 imr 3031 about two touching and one about 2 inches to the right 3 inches high! That is exactly how my now dead buckhorn hit. All the way down for full bore and all the way up for a 3 inch high hit with steel loads. I figure 4 turns up for moderate steel loads with some tweeking . I should be good past 200 yards with a 6 0'clock hold out to 120 or so and a center mass hold at maximum range with the hunting load. I'll have to tinker with holds with the steel loads with the 150 turkey and the 200 yard ram. I'm guessing top edge on the turkey and head high on the ram, but only the ~ting~ of steel will let me know for sure! I have a 336 Garandesque Appalachian Assualt Rifle with this thing on it. Quick on target and almost as precise out of the box as the buckhorns. with practice I am certain my groups will tighten to what the buckhorn would produce. Great sight on my favorite all purpose rifle!

I was trying to wrap my mind around the umbrella picture...then I figured out it was a group. If you were shooting that good with the factory iron sights on that Marlin that is some real good shootin mister! The gun looks real nice with your new sight. Thanks for the pics of her and your groups. 8-)

The idea is to add a leather butt pad and cuff to the short stock to add a little to the length to get closer to standard length of pull. A few cartridge holders on the cuff is part of the dream but funds are on hold for the "cowboy assault rifle" for now. ;)
