I have several pounds of IMR 4227 which was produced in Australia. I have a Dan Wesson 15-2 with a 6" barrel and a Marlin 1894C rifle both in .357 Magnum. Would 11.5 grains of this powder with a 160 grain checked boolit be a good combination for hunting? Or, general purpose in the woods around the U.S.?

Thanks,
Bradley

46th Lyman handbook shows 11.8gn starting load for a 158gn bullet, and 11.4gn for a 155gnGC. 4227 is one of the powders that I dont like to go light on, problems with incomplete ignition. bump that charge up one grain and you should be fine

i use the austrailan version with a fairly deep seated 190g TC-Gc slug. as recall my charge is 12.5g for 1200fps in an 8-3/8 S&W m27

FWIW, Lyman #49 lists 11.4gr min. and 15.2gr max. with the Lyman 358156-GC (155gr linotype) and IMR-4227. Also listed is 11.8 min. and 17.0 max. (compressed) with the Lyman 358311 (160gr linotype) and IMR-4227. All the .357 Magnum loads in Lyman #49 were worked up using CCI-550 primers.

Good advice from all three. Sound advice to not go lite with 4227.

Southern Shooter,
Mate, I don't know if IMR4227 is the same as H4227. Mulwex (the Ozzy Powder Company) makes what we call AR2205. I believe that Mulwex sells that (along with a butt load of others) to Hodgdon, who re-name it. What we call AR2208 becomes Varget, AR2206H becomes H4895, etc. I don't know for sure, but I am pretty certain that the AR2205 becomes H4227. But I don't know if it also becomes IMR4227. I would like to know one way or the other.

Having said all that, the Mulwex loading manual don't give any load data for a 160 grain boolit and AR2205. It does give 14.5 grains to 16.0 grains for a 158 grain JACKETED bullet, but none for lead boolits.

I hope what I just typed makes sense.
