Hi,

I've been experimenting with some fairly hot .45 Colt loads. I've settled on 18 gr of 2400 behind a 250 gr Lyman cast 452664 flat nose. Starline brass, CCI 300 primers. Sturdy crimp. I'm shooting in a Ruger BlackHawk Bisley with a 5.5 barrel. It's got a pretty stiff report, seems to burn all the powder as I've not noticed any unburnt flecks and in fact seems a little cleaner then my other standard round of 6.2 gr of Tight Group. Accuracy is very good. I see no pressure signs on fired brass or primer. I've not chronographed so I can't say exactly what is going on pressure wise but the physical evidence so far is that I'm not excessive.

I feel comfortable shooting this load as it's a full 1.2 grains less then John Linbaugh's load of 19.2 gr 2400 load from "Dissolving the myth".

But my question regards transitioning this load to use in my Japan manufactured Winchester model 92 carbine. Would anyone care to give me an opinion as to the suitability of this load to a rifle? I know the Ruger can handle it. I've no data on how the Winchester would stand the pressure.

I've not got a lot of posts here, I'm new to casting. I've been reloading since the mid 1970's so I'm not new to reloading. I'm a careful person and I won't take folks response to this question as gospel but I am curious to hear opinions.

Thanks,

Wayne

A modern made 92 can handle anything your revolver can.

Can't speak for the Winnie. But the Rossi 92 can, I'd hope the Winnie was up to par.

The same action in the Rossi is chambered for the 454 Casull.
Just an interesting tidbit to add in that when using powders in the 2400 burn rate in a 44 mag a loading that gave 1300 fps in the 7.5" barrel of a Ruger SBH gave 1700 fps in a Marlin 1894 carbine.
I would expect about the same from the 45 Colt.

My understanding is that the Miroku 92 Winchesters are equivalant at least in strength to the Rossi 92s. Thanks everyone for the feedback. I'll hopefully get to the range this week and try these out in the 92. 18 gr of 2400 in a .45 Colt is not exactly breaking new ground but it feels like a pretty stout load to me. I should probably invest in a chrony.

surfanarchist,

The 18.0gr of 2400 behind a 250gr cast bullet is a good one. I use the same load in my S&W 25-5 with a 265gr cast HP bullet, so while it is a stiff load, it is certainly not a Ruger-only load at about 23k psi. Absolutely no problem using it in any Model 92 made.

I don't shoot the 45 I have in 44mag I worked the load up in both at the same time.
Ended up with the same charge in both 1600 fps in the Winchester and 1200 in the SBH.
