Got tired of looking and ordered one of the Savage "scout" rifles for plinking jwords and boolits. I will need glass and am leaning towards a Leupold V-II. I'd appreciate hearing from other owners/shooters as to what they are running for optics and rings. Low mounts preferred.

For that rifle and caliber a 3-9 would be perfect. Please let us know how that rifle shoots. I was seriously eyeballing one when 7.62x39 ammo was cheap last year.

I'm using 3x9 on my 7.62x39 rifle but it's a standard scope - on my scout rifles I am using fixed power scopes for the most part except
for the Mini-14 which has Burris 1.5x5 which does work well for me.

I put a HiLux 3-9x32 on my 7x6.8 200-250 rds down range and it seems to be good to go the stops are positive and it'll do the grid square and come back +-a half click on the hot bbl. $125 at Midway. Maybe 1 in 50 is flawed based on reviews going back 2yr.

My Leupold VIII 1-5 came in over the weekend and is now mounted. I've worked up a series of jword and boolit loads to try in the next day or so and will report back. I must say that the scope is trim and excellent. The QWR rings weigh nearly as much as the scope! I have a HiLux variable LER on my Ruger Scout and am mighty impressed with it, but was too big for my trim little Savage.

I plan to put my 5-15x40 bushnell 3200 Tactical on my m77 in 7.62x39.
It shoots 311299's great! I think I will stretch this combo out as far as I can print groups on the paper.
Funn! funn!

Finnmike: Gotta tell ya' you ought to try a small red dot on that gun. I am using Bushnell TRS-25's on several guns. They are very good quality and can take the recoil of this type of gun and in addition they are $89.95 from most places. I get them from Dillon.

I have them on all of my 300 yard guns. AR, Keltec SU-16CA, Mini 14, and I'm probably going to try one on My Ruger GSR for Tactical Matches.

It is easy to hit a man sized target out to 200 yards offhand and 300 yards off a rest is no sweat. I even hit one at 400 yards at my last Front Sight Class. It took 6 shots and I was 2 feet to the left and two feet high for the shot that hit. 30 mph cross wind and 40F ambient. Had a good spotter for that shot.

Did I mention these sights weigh 3.2 oz?

These sights are the perfect answer for what you are going to use this gun for most often. Plinking, hunting under 200 yards, and maybe crowd control.

The zero magnification is of absolutely no handicap whatsoever. I am 63 and my eyes are just as bad as everyone else's, so if I can make it work you can too.

I have a CZ 527 in 7.62x39 and I put one of the new Redfield (made by Leupold) 2x7 on there and it is great. Perfect size and this one has the different reticle that has a circle around the cross hairs and a dot lower on the verticle crosshair so I have a few different aiming points to use. I primarly use this gun as a cast bullet shooter so having the different aiming points without having to spin the dial is great. Worth a look!

vx2 2x7 would be about ideal to me. Id even consider the newest version of the vx1. they now have click ajustments instead of friction and fully multicoated optics. there basicaly the same scope as the vx2 was last year for a 100 bucks less.

I've been to the range once so far. Summertime activities have kept me busy....it shoots milsurp pretty well, 2 MOA easily. I had a couple of groups tickling 1.5 MOA with a flier. 150 SMK's over 26-27 gr of old IMR 4895 group into an honest 1 MOA. However, this rifle MUST have a fouled bore to group acceptably. The first cold bore/clean bore shot will group an inch outside of the next 5 rounds! I've only had 100 jacketed rounds down the bore so that may change. The bore is very slick btw. Lead shot all over the place; I was not able to get good neck tension. More work needed there, but for good loads with SMKs it's a shooter.

Mine miked .302 - .309 5" back from the muzzle. Used 4895 and 2400 with Lee 170 and 180, and 311299 all sized to .309, what I had on hand. Still need to do lots of experimentation.

anything in the 1-4 or 3-9 range would be perfect

I am shooting my 311299, 200gr. Boolet with varget.
It burns a little dirty until I loaded a slightly compressed charge. Shoots great!
