What kind of primer are you using?

Read an article the other night about a the 22 Hornet and the guy was using 2400 powder. He had switched from Rifle Primers to Pistol Primers and got better accuracy (J bullets).

I remember a long time ago working a load with 2400 and LP Mag primers - the accuracy just wasn't there, remembered what Elmer said about 2400 and Mag primers and switched to regular LP primers and my groups shrank to what I expected.

Wondering if it could be the same with Larger Rifle and Large Pistol primers in the 308 win loads.

Anyone out there using LP primers in the 308 Win?

Initial test:

LC 01 brass, RCBS 308-165-Sil (Actual weight is 172+ grains) 19.5 grains of 2400, CCI LP primers

Group was smaller with a lateral dispersion. Maybe me, maybe not. That was a 5 round group.

I want to try 20.0 grains before I settle on 19.5 (or drop to 19.0)

Time will tell.

Oh - the Primers were flattened a little bit but not as much as my 44 mag loads which has a higher chamber pressure than what I am loading in the 308 Win.

Second Test:

LC 01 brass, RCBS 308-165-Sil (Actual weight is 172+ grains) 20.0 grains of 2400, CCI LP primers.

Primers seemed to be no flatter @ 20 gr than they were at 19.5 grains.

Group shrunk from 2.4 to 1.4 inch.

2.25 - 2.5 was the best I could get with large rifle primers (Remington didn't try the CCI's). I have dropped 3/4's of an inch for 5 rounds.

Beginning to wonder if I should bump the charge to 20.5.

Well - 20.5 was a bust! Groups opened up to about 5 inches!

As I have some 5744 - I need to try it (go back to LRP for those too).

I am just not happy with 1.4 inch - Not bad mind you, just I think they should do better - I know my 45/70's and my 45/90's will out shoot the RGS Scout and the 45/90's have Soule Sights with front Globes! :)
