We have a fire over near Prescott, AZ. It started yesterday morning and in one hour went from 20 acres to over 500. It is now over 7000, still small in comparison to some of the Colorado fires...but threatening homes. It's burning in the chaparral which is dry as a tinder box. I had the opportunity to see the DC 10 dropping slurry, it was amazing to see such a large plane maneuvering over the mountaintops to make drops on this fire. I have seen the P3's before, but not one of these huge tankers. I was truly a sight to see.

That DC10 is something to see. It's going so slow, you'd think it'd fall out of the air.

Never saw a DC10 water bomber, must be impressive.
Any videos or stills of it?

How about the Martin Mars?

The Dc10 is impressive and so is the MM. I have seen the Canadian Super Scooper a number of times, they skim the water to refill and have come in at telephone pole height. All of those pilots have large brass you know whats.

Go down the video list and look for the Evergreen aviation 747 .... 24,000 gallons ... wow !
Little bit of controversy with it , something about it doesn't fit Fed guidelines .. that's why you rarely see it.

In the late 60's I was stationed at a Navy base (I was on the Marine side) that had a squadron of P-2's. loved watching them take off and land.

The latest I have heard our government STILL will not let the 747s work in the U S.

They have to go elsewhere in the world to put out SOMEONE ELSES fires.

Never heard any reason from OUR government why.

That Evergreen 747 drops a swath for 25,000 feet , ...
The most the others do is about 2,800 long or so.
Sure would have been nice to have for the Colorado fires.

The 747 carried 24,000 gal of water, that's 199,920 lbs of water. Now don't you know that dumping that much weight in a few seconds is a kick in the behind. I think I'd like to feel that one time.

IF and when you reach 75+ you will understand why we get excited flying at almost 25,000' and the plain starts jerkin n n n.:(

And I bet most younger folks will to if they truly got smarts.

Them birds are designed to travel just like rifle boolits. :castmine:

Only 19 years behind ya........I love to fly, have a pilot friend in the ANG who when not deployed flys surveillance missions in support of law enforcement on the border in an old metro liner who I have been fortunate enough to tag along with a couple of times. He has flown some fire suppression missions in the past and I understand it is quite a challenge as large fires create their own special weather/winds. So, all that to say I find it exciting as well!
