26 grains seems to be about 65% +/- case capacity with my Lee 405gr plain base bullet in my Marlin 45/70

Will this need a filler.

I wanted to try 4579 for something in the 1300fps range but when I weighed out the charge I noticed it was pretty small.

I would prefer not to mess with fillers if I don't have to.

Thanks

Ryan

I don't think you will find filler necessary in that application, but it is easy to test.

You do not need a filler. You have the best powder available for what your trying to do. Try 23 gr. to 24 gr. instead of the 26 gr. to get to around 1300 fps and use a good crimp so that the powder burns correctly.

I really want to shoot a whitetail this year with this 405 going kind of slow.

I read a sig line or quote here once that said something to the effect "if you can't kill it with nearly an ounce of lead travelling over 4 football fields in a second, then you aren't hunting in north america. So many people are in awe when I show them these big boolits that I have cast, and most just don't believe they are lethal enough at slower speeds to be ethical. I try to explain to people that where I hunt in Northern Lower Michigan a 100-110# whitetail is actually a little small for that big of boolit.

Don't get me wrong i am a recoil junkie also. I currently have some Ranch Dog 425's sitting atop some IMR 4198 that will develope a flinch in any new shooter with one trigger pull, I just want to try the other end of the spectrum.

Thanks

Just recently I have been using this powder in the 40 65 with a 300 grain boolit.
Twenty five grains is very good for accuracy and clean burning.
This is with naked PB boolit, homemade lube.
I thought I would try a card wad and filler. accuracy went south with each and both, a little cleaner though. Back to square one. At this point I will refine the powder charge, less and more, in that order and see how it goes.
This is the most encouraging load I have found for my rifle. Most loads I use in the 40 65 are borrowed from 45 70 data. I am not trying to discourage you from using fillers and wads as a lot of times they really help. This time they didn't for me. That's all a steer can do is try.:-D

I've been shooting 25 grains of 4759 under a 405 grain bullet in my lever guns since 1998. In the last several years I've been shooting the same charge under a plain base RCBS 325 grain bullet in my Browning 86 carbine. Shot so well I tried in my rifles; shoots great, also. I love that powder! Now my standard load for Cowboy lever action silhouettes is the 325 (actual weight 342 grains.)

I shoot the RCBS 405 GC bullet over 25/4759 in my Marlin 1895 levergun. Accuracy is one ragged hole at 50 yards with mild recoil (for a 45-70). Plenty of stomp for deer or about anything else.

Nope...no filler!!!

4759 is maybe the best powder I have ever used in my 45-70 revolver. I find a pinch of dacron gives me a small increase in accuracy with the revolver but will not be needed in the rifle. I have a long run to the forcing cone so it helps. The powder ignites easy and burns clean.
I would not use any kind of wad in the gun, even over a filler.

Man, you guys got me pumped up to try this stuff now. I may be out of work in about an hour and that is where I will be headed.

I use 16.0 gr. of SR-4759 under th 330 gr. Gould Hollow point bullet in my 45-70s. I found that a one gr. tuft of dacron gave me a smaller extreme spread, 1600 FPS and 1.5" groups from a receiver sighted first version new Model Marlin 1895. (The one with the curved plastic buttplate designed by the Marquis de Sade.) The same load does virtually the same velocity from my Ruger #1 with groups running at 1.25".
Right now, I have the bullets cast up, the brass is ready but my gunshop doesn't have the powder.
Probably just as well as the area I drew for deer this year is mostly 200 or more yard shooting. Maybe next year, if I live that long.

25 grains did not do it for me so I jumped to 27 (don't ask) group dropped down to 2". I can not use my cronograph when I shoot at my house because my 100 yard lane is in the trees with too much canopy. With a little tweeking I think I will have a mild go-to round.
