Well I reckon the wifes soup ladle and the gas BBQ make just fine booolits. http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh199/mickydoo600/IMG_3766_zpsb397bf6c.jpg (http://s256.photobucket.com/user/mickydoo600/media/IMG_3766_zpsb397bf6c.jpg.html) The cast 310 slugs I made a while back, while not perfect, shoot straight ,and after digging them out of a clay bank at 25 yards had mushroomed just dandy. The copper clad nugget in the back is a 300XTP,which held together just fine also, but proved bloody hopeless at killing a big tahr a while back??? Should I stick with the .308 for hunting? I like the idea of the little lever gun for close hunting.

Had to look up "Tahr" seems its a wild goat. In the some parts of the US a big tahr goes on a pickup truck, you know big black round thing made out of rubber.

That's a nice result, but more appropriate for 2 legged targets( do you have kangaroos or other large standing marsupials in NZ?). I'd use tougher alloy, I prefer penetration over expansion for hunting.

How much does a Tahr weigh? and what Lever gun are you using (what cartridge)? What is your bullet alloy? Jupiter7 is right make them a little harder. From the pictures the lead appears to be almost pure lead.

Too much expansion. The .44 needs none at all.

My feeling is simply, if it aint broke, dont fix it. If the
44 boolits do the job on a tahr (whatever the hell that is), whats wrong ? ? ? ?

44mag 310gn lee cast with wheel weights. A big bull tahr weighs about 300lb,big boned and thick skin, fairly similar to your mountain goat. Maybe some more zinc or something would toughen the mixture up.I have a big sacrificial anode off a boat here, that is zinc I think.

Danger Will Robinson! Danger!!

All together now, "Zink is bad, zink is horrible, zink will RUIN your day!"

(You don't want to get zink in your lead)

NZ44, Drop them thar boolits from the mold into a deep can of cold water. They will harden up in 2 weeks.
They will shoot through that thar tahr

so if you grind them up and add mayonnaise do you get creme of tahr tahr

I'm no expert on cast boolits but I say just a little harder and you would be good to go
great expansion and massive wound cavity

Hamish is right. Back a long time ago when they first came out with zink tire weights I ruined several 10 # pots of tire weight lead. It took me just a little while to figure out what the problem was. When I noticed some the tire weights were floating on the melt and taking longer to melt that was the clue. DO NOT USE ZINK TO ALLOY YOUR LEAD.

We have the Himalayan Tahr (Hemitragus jemlahicus) which I believe is heavy boned and very tough. They use 300 Win Mags on them, mostly because of the range they are hunted at. Even then they take some killing it seems. Considering where and how they live, it's not surprising.

They get quite tame as you can see in that second photo.

NZ44, I gather your lever gun is the 44mag. You should get enough power out of it with 310gr boolits for close range shots. You can gain more powder capacity by seating the boolits out further and crimping behind the first land or maybe even the second. Not sure that the lever gun will cycle a longer cartridge. But if it can be done and the boolit can be prevented from pushing back into the case (bad news pressure wise) you could gain a useful edge. Unlike a revolver, the lever gun tends to push the boolits deeper - the revolver pulls them out.

Add some Cu to your alloy, it will reduce the curl like the middle one. AC will be hard in a couple days.

What kind of lever gun are you using? M92? M94? M1894 Marlin?
