Guys,

I got to play with a nice piece of history today. A guy came into the Bullet Stop while I was playing with my sixguns, and I noticed he had a nice lookin' Blackhawk. I asked him what he had, and he says, "Oh, some guns my uncle gave me.". He let me shoot the Blackhawk, which turned out to be a .44. Serial number 1911! I nearly crapped! (Nope, it's not for sale, I asked, and my buddy was jumping up and down, yelling, "DIBS!!!")

Same guy's uncle also left him a matched pair of rifles. A 94 and 94-22. Why do people who could care less about guns inherit the ones I would snorkel in a manure pit for?

..............Seems that way sometimes, doesn't it? Co-worker bought a place in the desert west of 29 Palms about 2 hours from here. There was a bunch of junk piled by an outbuilding and he thought he saw a rifle barrel. Turns out it was two 1903 Springfield barreled actions, a loose Springfield action, and a barreled M1917 Remington complete-less wood.

He isn't a "Gun Guy", didn't know what to do with them so gave'em to me :-)

Got the wood from GPC. The metal and barrel was basicly perfect. A few little dusty rust spots outside.

One of the Springfields I created a "Garage Sporter" from. My term for just something slapped together from easily gotten parts. One of my Burrito Shooter buddies sold me the STEEL Lyman #57 sight for $15. Another friend sold me the military scant grip sporter stock and a bolt with altered handle for $25. I was ready to go! It's kind of scabby looking , but I think it has a bit of appeal like that. It's solid, comfortable and shoots exceedingly well.

One of the 1st groups shot with the Sporter! The Lee Soup Can, C309-113F and 8.0grs of Red Dot @ 50 yards.

Another shooting buddy had a friend of his pass away. A couple years went by and he got a call from his friend's widow. She said she was finally doing some cleaning up and wanted to know if he would like his old rifles none of the kids took? He said sure, and got a like new 1903A3 Springfield like it just came out of the wrapper, a nice M1917 Eddystone, and a M1917 Eddystone sporter which he wants to put back all military.

Feel free to send me the other parts. I've never built one before.

OK, folks--if Buckshot tries to convince us that his "Garage Sporter" is the Asperley Aimless, we can consider ourselves fairly warned.

Just to steer this thread back toward handgun topicality.......Buckshot brought out his newly-acquired S&W Model 67 on Tuesday, and let me give it a test drive. NICE!! Pinned barrel, pre-81, and like new condition. Therre are few handguns as sublimely satisfying to shoot as a K-frame 38 Special or N-frame 44 Special.

Oh, I don't know.........I was lucky to get a shooter 5 screw S&W Model 29. 6 1/2 blue with Pachmayers. and it is virtually a hand built gun. No Box....no tools....not even original grips, but a 99% gun. The quality of those old N frame 44 mags is just astounding. It shoots beautifully. The action is as smooth as glass. I paid $750 for it four years ago and did not hesitate a second to do so.

I wouldn't waste an instant paying that, either. Most assuredly H--L YES!
