went to heat up my mold to get the lead off that was sticking at the end of my last casting session, took it off the hot plate and this is what I had. This is after 20 minutes with comet and brake cleaner. No clue how to clean this stuff off, will call Al tomorrow but was hoping to cast in the early AM with this. No idea what the heck happened738507385173852

Melted lube?

Looks like burnt oil of some kind. Did you put anything on the mold between last time or this time?

Get it up to casting temp and wipe it with a cotton rag, burlap also works well.

Nope, last thing I did before heating it up was actually wash it with comet and water to try to get the stuck on lead off.

Looks like cooked in Comet to me. Run it under water and scrub with Comet again with a "firm" toothbrush, it should come off. Be sure to rinse the mold very well when done.
Good Luck,
Rick

Sure looks like some kind of residue.

Try a different solvent.

Looks like some cleaning or lack thereof was done in the wrong sequence.

I've used a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser (the extra strong ones), hot water and Dawn dish soap to clean off molds. Give it a try you may be quite surprised.

I washed it extremely well after cleaning, however I cannot rule out there have been something it came into contact with between cleaning and heating. Tried comet and as firm a nonmetallic brush as I have for 15-20 minutes and the pictures are the result, it was worse.

Looks like you might have been making bullet burgers in it.

Try bore solvent. It can melt some pretty gnarly stuff. That or even acetone.

May need to try a good soak in solvent.

It doesn't look pretty but cast some and see what the diameters are running.

Looks like "Pam" residue. What did you coat the mold with after last use??

Can you feel the residue with a fingernail or non-metallic object? It sure looks like polymerized oil to me. Either a good solvent or a LOT of heat will get it off. I'd be afraid of getting nice molds that hot, though. It'll be interesting to hear what Al says.

Oven cleaner.

Bill

Hopefully non-caustic on an aluminum mold.

If the stuff does not mark the castings or interfere with mould operation, don't worry about it.

I think it's Chocolate and we aren't getting the whole story.:-D

Seriously, Oven cleaner will attack aluminum. At least the Easy Off I used on aluminum cooking sheets etched the metal badly.

Put in an ultra sonic cleaner with burnishing solution used to clean brass

If cleaning with a toothbrush you didn't have the mold to hot and somehow have the brush melt into the mold did you? I'm not sure how hot it would have to be before having that occur.

I'd try some acetone and let it soak. (remove handles). If it's oil or plastic acetone should get it.

I laughed at the chocolate comment. sorry op.

Got your moulds in today
Took some time to work them over
The 311 247Gr. FN was in need of some TLC
Had lead splatter on the face of it that was holding it open
And the sprue plate was out of adjustment
The best I could tell the stains on the face and two cavities
was something the migrated from the sprue plate hold down screw hole (red thread lock?)
Cleaned every thing the best I could and replaced what screws needed to be.
Heated it up and cast with it.

Still a good useable mould but its not new.

Checked out the 311 155Gr. FN that you sent back and all I could find was
the sprue plate was out of adjustment
If something is holding it open, check your handles - the mould is OK -
It should be good to go.

Now THAT is customer service.

No joke, guy is working past 7 pm his time on a saturday to fix a service issue, that is major league dedication. I have no clue what that stuff could have been since even I am not insane enough to use loctite on the mold, Nothing but Bullplate, guess something could have gotten on it and I will recheck my area before I do anything with these or even take them out of the box. Much appreciated Al, this is EASILY the best service I have ever received for any product that I can remember, shooting or otherwise. Guy did this good of service and now I shall spend more of my coin at his site and buy a 9mm mold.

Did he lube and size the boolits for you too? Excellent service and a weird problem.

The strongest hydrocarbon solvent you can get is MEK. Ir will dissolve anything organic. Acetone is the next step down.

You may have to soak it for a while, but those should dissolve any kinds of baked-on poly oil.

And just for kicks, try good old methyl alcohol. Amazing what it will dissolve. Just don't drink it! it's not Everclear.
