View Full Version : The 'Official' New Zealand hunting uniform

Jim

JeffinNZ sent me a pair of long johns for a hunting trip to New Zealand, so Janet picked out a matching shirt.

Jeff said if I wear this coming through customs on a visit to New Zealand, they'd wave me right through.

Jeff, are you SURE about that?

As a landed gentleman of worth and honor, just as Jim is...I needed to ensure my sartorial threads were complimented with the appropriate "Rabbit-hunting Gear." Thusly, I bring you Jeff's Kiwi Purple striped tights with Wellington Field Boots and Jean Shorts topped off with my loudest Hawaiian/Bowling Shirt and my Sun Hat from my last trip to Iraq.

Thankfully, the sanest portion of this photo is my Hunter Arms 12gauge Side by Side which will be used to dispatch those Rascally Rabbits when I get a chance to blast them off my back porch...

Chris, you're just gunna confuse them more talking about a 'Swannie'.

A 'Swannie' is a woollen bush shirt/coat famous in NZ in the rural community. I have a 'knock off' version by Leda. They are toastie warm but a spot heavy when on the hill hunting so I don't wear mine as much.

http://www.swanndri.co.nz/Mens/Bushshirts/SSD0103/Original-100-Wool-Bushshirt.html

Actually, just looking at what they cost now I was disgusted. All Swandri is now made in CN and the landed cost of a bushshirt now will be about USD15.00 tops.

yeap , no one out side New Zealand , will understand why we dress in a particular way , until they spend some time here .

Our bush is often , very thick , imagine pushing thru a hedge or small bush almost all the time , and we have in places a large rain fall , and even when its NOT raining , the bush is still wet , and this rubs onto you , so alot of guys wear shorts as its better to have wet legs , than wet legs & wet pants , so wet & cool temps , results in nasty combination that can kill real quick .
Water runs off your legs quick & drys quick , to leave you in a more comfortable position .

Although a lot of hunters have moved away from old traditional gear/materials , ie like away from wool to sat polyprop , as its lighter in weight .
Wool will keep you warm wether its wringing wet or dry , some others will not do this at all , and in extreme conditions that will kill you , when wool is wet though its very heavy , Opps , also wool is not the same fire risk of alot of the new synthetic gear .

The swannie , smock model with lace up opening & hood , in solid green colour is the classic hunters/farmers jacket/top , in the early 80s it was also a un-offical bit of kit the NZ Army allowed the Infantry to use in the field .
In some places you have wet/warm or dry/cold , in NZ we have wet/cold and thats a real killer , as sooner or later all your kit can become not just wet , but wringing wet .

Cheers Chris

Blind drunk, color blind, raider of Goodwill bins would be the only ones CAUGHT wearing those items.

Don't worry Jim, I also tip the elbow on a regular basis. Between the two of us we'll cover for Jeff.

I grew up in a biker family and I think I can more than hold my own with most patched and badged ruffians of the open road. After seeing two friends getting scraped up after horrible wrecks due to car drivers not paying attention to bikers, I swore off driving on two wheels until I decide to meet the big guy upstairs.

Yip Floyd. That clobber would be "de rigeur" for most restaurants in New Zealand. Some would consider it a bit over dressed for walking the hills however. But then again, I did see some "toff" in the Waimate hills once shooting wallabies in his Sunday best which looks very similar to your kit.

Well I made a foolish move and looked at that picture. My Optometrist told me today they will remove the blackout pads in a week or so. The flash burns from that picture will have cost me at least a month of casting and shooting time.

Monitors please remove those photos before more seniors loose their eye sight.[smilie=1:

Your post made me want to check it out again, my memory is getting weak, I did take precautions and put my welders helmet on first. I had a #10 glass in it should have used the #14, I just need to wear dark glasses for a couple of weeks when I go outside.

I've seen enough films from that part of the world to know that all New Zealanders and Australian hunters wear hats and vests made of crocodile skins and drive only stake bed trucks festooned with kangaroo carcasses, for decoration only of course.
When not hunting they roam around in beat up stripped down cars covered with animal hides searching for the precious juice.
