Mods, if this is in the wrong forum please move it. I found I have a good amount of LRM primers but only a few hundred LR primers, Federal 215. Any reason I couldn't use the magnum primers and reduce my starting loads? I'm loading for my FNA1 in 308, 168 gr. Hdy moly coated bthp, 4064 and/or 760 powders. In one manual it recommended magnum primers with the 760 powder. Thanks for any and all advise. James

A friend of mine, who only shoots jacketed projectiles, only uses mag primers for all his large rifle primer needs. He shoots a 300 RUM and several 308 and 30-30 size cases, and doesn't want to stock regular and mag primers. He works up loads for the non-magnum cases, he has been doing this for at least 10 years and he shoots very good groups with all his rifles. He does have a serious character flaw, I can't get him interested in shooting cast in his rifles.

Sounds like a good plan by reducing the load.

I would never buy mag primers unless they were all I could get. ( A fairly common problem nowadays. )

But if I were in your position, I would not hesitate a minute to use them.

You should never need a magnum primer for anything smaller than a 30-06 or the 30 cal magnums.

CCIs report on magnum primers dated 2010 stated unless your loading more than 63grs of powder, only thing a magnum primer does is create more pressure.

Being I have nothing bigger than an odd six (well the 45/70 is) I have used up or sold off all my magnum primers.

I find magnum primers give me more consistent velocity with some loads that use slower powders(H4831, H4350,HYBRID100, H414/760, 4064, etc) at the low end of j-word data when used with cast.....that equates to more accuracy. Everyday I find more and more uses for magnum large rifle primers. I use them in alot of calibers including 30/30, 35REM, 30/06, 35Whelen, 8X57, 7.65X53, etc. The standard caveat of backing off a bit and working up aplies, but I would almost bet on your liking your LMRP adventure especially with H414/W760.

with ball powders i about allways use a mag primer even in cases like the 308 and 243.

Thanks guys, I've been reloading for about 9 or 10 years, but haven't done any, none at all, for 2 years and wanted to be sure my memory wasn't failing me. Never admit to old age being the problem. I thought I'd be ok, but always respect the opinion of the folks here. Again, Thanks, James
