I am convinced that I enjoy pain and misery or I am simply touched in the head. I bought a gun collection that included a single shot rifle rebarreled and chambered in 225 Winchester. It is the best looking rifle I own. I should have just passed it on down the road. Not only is brass about as plentiful as pig feathers,[some pigs do fly you know] the cases are designed to be used in the model 70. To make the 30-30 case ,[from which it is derived] work in a bolt gun required that it be slightly modified, and as Shakespear so aply put it, there in lies the rub. The 225 is almost identicle to the 219 Zipper omproved. I did at one time own a single shot so chambered. I had all my 219 zipper improved brass left so I figured no problemo. I couldn't have been wronger. The 225 has a smaller rim, both in diameter and thickness. My friend Buckshot was kind enough to reduce the 219 rim to match the 225. This led to another headache. I had no shellholder to fit the 225 case. I am stymied. It looks as though Lee and Hornady are the only companies who make them. I hate to order such a small item because of the postage and what few gunshops there are here have little or no reloading gear. I even thought about getting the rifle rebored. The problem there is, what do I rebore it to. I already have single shots in 30-30, 32-40, 38-55, 40-65, 40 Krag and 45-70. I finally thought of one. How about the 25-35? I have lots of such brass plus the loading dies. I have no idea who offers reboring or how much it might cost. Probably too much. It would be a shame to bore out such a beautiful barrel without it ever being fired. I am posting a picture so you can judge whether it is worth all the trouble.

If we did things the easy way all the time life would be pretty damn dull. I shoot a 8MM Siamese and a few other odd ones. half the fun is getting one in shape to shoot and making brass.

RCBS Custom caliber list shows #11 being the correct shell holder. Redding says to use their #4. " It would be a shame to bore out such a beautiful barrel without it ever being fired." Yes it would. It's a pretty good cartridge.

Somehow I think a shell holder, even with the shipping, will be less expensive than a rebore, or, in this case, a re-chamber since you are keeping a quarter inch bore. Brass is a disposable item, even in a single shot it eventually wears out. Get or make the right brass and enjoy what you have!

Buffalo Arms list them (http://www.buffaloarms.com/225_Winchester_Reloading_Brass_it-156920.aspx?CAT=3834), presently out of stock but back order OK.

I am pretty sure my local gunstore has some 225 win brass. I know he did as recent as a month ago. Every once in a while I would pull some out and wish I had something to shoot them out of. If you really need some I can check in the next day or two. Let me know.

I have seen the gun and it is extremely nice. I hope GS can fire it as is.

Look at the Gunbroker website to find your brass. Once in Gunbroker, go to Ammunition Reloading - Reloading Supplies - 225 Winchester brass. Quite often I have found brass there that was not available anywhere else. Good luck.

That's a nice rifle. If it were me, I'd do what it took to make .225 ammo and shoot it.

Wasn't the .225 Winchester's answer to Remington legitimizing the .22-250? Seems like it ought to be a great performer once you get it shooting.

I should have said in my thread that I had once owned a rifle on the same type action but rebarrled and chambered to 219 zipper improved, which is the reason I have the zipper brass. The two cartidges are almost identicle. They are both very close to the 22-250 in performance. I went to Buckshots house today and he gave me a shellholder for the 225. It also fits the 6.5 Jap. Ain't that weird? After a friend talked me out of the 219 zipper rifle he ran at warp speed to another man's house and bought an original barrel and forend for the gun and quickly sold it for 1700 dollars. Both rifles were originaly chambered for the 8.15x 46R. The cartridge was used both for hunting and target shooting. It is very close to our 30-30 in size and power. In fact it is easy to make brass for the 8.15 from 30-30.
